the AR is a case style developed to replace moon clipped 45 acp cases.
I don't think any guns are actually chambered [stamped as such] for the round.

airc the 1917 revolvers were set up to supplement the 1911's in war time and the [full and half and 1/3rd] moon clip was the work around to speed re-loading and topping off the revolver in combat.

After the First World War, the 1917's (both Colt and S&W) were sold for very low prices as surplus. As a result, this "flood" of handguns hit the civilian market. Peters Cartridge came out with the .45 Auto Rim cartridge specifically for these war surplus 1917 revolvers.

Frankly, the .45ACP and .45 Auto Rim rank high among my favorite cartridges for revolvers. When handloaded, they become extremely useful both "On the Range and in the Field". I have a pair of late model 625's (5" 625-6 and a 4" 625-8 JM Special) as well as the Ruger Bisley .45 ACP/.45 Colt Convertible. My convertible works so well that I will be keeping it. However, even tho' I probably will not buy one (since I have the Bisley) the Flattop convertible (.45ACP/.45Colt) DOES call to me....

I made 1 of these from the last step of a golf club shaft with the grip .

The AR came about much later than the 1917s ,1952 comes to mind .

I had a S&W Model 25-2 for a time. Moonclips were and are a PITA to clip and unclip ammo from. There are snazzy "de-mooner" tools available now, and the clips are a pretty decent speedloader for D/A swingout wheelguns. Still, 45 AR cases are a whole lot simpler, and HKS makes speedloaders to fit them for the S&W 25-series 45 ACP/AR cylinders.

I was looking into moon clips for a 1917 , there seems to be quite a split in prices . Buy 5 Wilson's and they're like $2 ea buy 100 from what appears to be a podunk outfit (revolver supply or something like that) and they're like $0.50 shipped . Funny thing laying side by side they're identical ......Right down to the tool marks . I have about 40 clips and 250 AR cases ,should hold me for a while .

RBHarter;
The .45 Auto Rim was produced by Peters Cartridge about 1920.

I bought 100 steel full moon clips from Ranch Products for a very reasonable price.
Lately, I have been using RIMZ Polymer clips. Their most recent type is a stiffer Hydro-Carbon/Polymer that retains the cases better for speed loading. They can be loaded and unloaded EASILY without tools. Google "EZ Moonclips".

Sure enough it was 1920 . I wonder why I thought it was 52' ..... Must be something significant attached .....
Revolver supply company is the correct reference .
$12/10,18/20,35/50,55/100 plus shipping .
They also carry moon clips for the other rimless revolvers in 9,40 etc , as well as tools .

Welcome to the marvels of marketing. (Wilson moon clips vs no-name moon clips).

Wilson isn't known for selling much at a bargain, although generally their stuff is good
quality.

.(thank you guys for not saying 45 LONG Colt).

That's a pet peeve of mine too. Just because some obscure collector somewhere produced one actual relic box of commercial cartridges labeled ".45 Short Colt" that was made briefly about the turn of the last century doesn't automatically imply that I or anyone else should ever have to worry about making a distinction when referencing the original 1873 .45 Colt's cartridge. If ever anyone feels the need to make a distinction, IMO they should apply it only to the .45 Schofield (which had a larger rim than the original balloon head Colt's cartridge) or the dual-use M1887 ball (a true, "short" Colt) which was only used by the U.S. military and has been obsolete for over 100 years.

The Wilson's I believe have the RS on them but I'd have to go through the whole can of Cal 45 of 1911 in 1917 clips to be sure .
