Ruger Hawkeye Stainless, 7X57mm

S Mac

Sept. 10, 2021 Steve left us. You are missed.
I see your point, I've used 30 cal several times, but not 7mm.

I wonder how Trevor would work out with a Ranch Dog, 190 gr. RF g/c bullet ? ?
I could have him shooting my 357 Max Ruger # 1 with a reduced load.

Or he could shoot this RCBS of mine at 204 grs. in the Max ( or possibly out of 357 Mag brass ). My ranges will be 40 - 75 yards.

Ben, that may well be an excellent choice. Plenty of mass, good unexpanded diameter, and a cartridge that handles downloading well.
2400 would be an excellent choice because I am certain you have it on hand, it can give good velocities in the cartridge, and it handles downloading pretty darn well.
You can start him out with lower end loads and play it by ear from there.

I would go with the 190 RD.
I would also go with Carnuba Red instead of Carnuba Blue.

I know the boy don't know but it wouldn't hurt to ask his opinion.
give him some options and see what he says.
if nothing else it opens a dialogue and some teaching can happen.

Good suggestion.

For that one shot in the field I doubt he'd even feel or notice a heavier load . Most don't even know when the shot breaks .

I use Speer 130 gr. SPBT's and Nosler 120 BT's at 2550 and 2650 fps respectively in a Contender Carbine 7-30 Waters. Both bullets perform excellent on deer at those velocities out to 200 yds. and the recoil is mild even in a 5.5 lb. scoped rifle.

Even today, when I shoot it game, I never noticed recoil or muzzle blast. I only noticed that when shooting from the bench

I've been told that about recoil (and deafening muzzle blast, too) since I was a kid and for me at least, it matters a whole lot if you know the rifle is going to hurt you and make your ears bleed for three days. I think that whole attitude is a disservice to a budding young sportsman, and if he isn't comfortable and confident with his rig before going after game, ha may not make a good shot and he may lose interest permanently.

Fiver said it best......check in with the KID and keep a barometer on his feelings as he tries different things. If an adequate load in the 7mm is uncomfortable for him, try the Max, etc. I bet he gets used to slightly heavier rifle recoil pretty quickly, but as they say "once bitten, twice shy".

good point Ian.
it's funny I can shoot hundreds of rounds of 12ga shells in a day for days on end, and have been able to do that since I was about 9-10.
but I couldn't shoot a 30-06 worth beans because of the 'perceived' recoil. [308.. no problem]
I perceived it when I was a kid and was not prepared for what was to come and never got over it until just a couple of years back.
I'm still not a fan of any of the magnum rifles.

Ben I’ve always been surprised how little recoil the hot 357 max loads produce.

The NOE 360-180 full tilt out of my encore kicks much less than a marlin 336 in 30-30 in my opinion.

It doesn’t make since but there’s definitely a difference.

My friend once told me......" If you believe something strongly enough , it will eventually become the truth." Recoil may be like that.

I think today's kids grow up with different pier pressures from society.
I know I'm an old fart, but when I grew up in the south, I couldnt wait till I was old enough to hunt with my dad. Everybody we knew hunted and everyone ate what they shot. I started with a 30-30, but was hunting with a 12 ga. and .270 by the time I was 9.
When I started hunting with my Dad, not everyone on our block had a tv. Not poor, just that the technology wasn't that availabe.
Now days kids have so many choices that compete for their time. 5 and 6 year old kids already have their own phones that the parents use as baby sitters to keep the kids quit and occupied. They grow up in a whole different culture.
I applaud you Ben for keeping him interested and active in shooting and hunting and I agree with talking to him and making sure he feels like he has a voice an is not pressured.
It is a privilege that a lot of the world does not have. Glad you are able to pass it on.
Okay, I'll get off my soap box.

Ben, big question. Which rifle fits him the best? Are you making an allowance for a heavier short/coat for deer season wearher?

Anyone else think Ben needs to restock a rifle with an adjustable length stock for his grandson? Nothing too fancy, maybe just a simple high grade walnut stock with 28 LPi checkering? A nice soft recoil pad would help too.

A good recoil pad will go a long ways towards taming The Recoil and making him more comfortable shooting it.
