Seeking Mold information

I am told it is a Ideal. It is a single cav and a hollow base mold.

Mold number looks to be 358404. I thought he was mistaken and it was a 356404 (that Bullet I know)

Here is pics he sent. (Sorry not in good focus)

I have two lists of Ideal/Lyman moulds. That number does not appear on either. I could only attach one here due to size limitation. Even as a PDF it was too big.

I'm no expert. But when I was searching for bullets for my Springfield, a friend had a Lyman mould that had a unique number on it. I remember it including a letter. Did some research and learned that Lyman would assign a number to a new bullet design and then would later assign a new number to that bullet. He actually had two identical moulds that made the same bullet and they had different numbers stamped on them.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
It appears to be the 358073 in mismarked blocks. 358073 is similar to 358072 except hollow base and nose pour.
Might be, but the nose looks longer than the catalog pics.

It could be a custom job from back in the day when Ideal would cut whatever a custom wanted. The nose looks Keith-ish. I'd like to see a casting, that would give a better idea.

At large, whereabouts unknown.
358404 HB appears to have had a short catalogued life, listed in the Ideal Handbooks from 1931 to 1933. I see an internet reference to "Maynard" associated with this mould number, which could refer to one of the 35 Maynard rifle cartridges. That could sort of fit in with this moulds not appearing to have a crimping groove, but I'm wayyyy out of my comfort zone with this one. It doesn't appear to match the .38 Colts pattern either.

Sorry, not much help here.
ETA: Speeling again, gol' dang it!

This is something that crossed my mind. I did not know about the 358073 but I agree and see the resemblance.

I have to say that this is most likely a mould for the 38 Maynard or 38 Stevens. The plug is of the style that was used in the early Ideal days. When Lyman bought the company, they tried to use the same plug with pin that didn't work well. Belding and Mull did the same thing. Lyman got all the old Ideal cherries and may have made a run of everything available. FWIW

Do you have an online link to any of them, the manuals? I just found a place that offers reprints, I don't have anything of the Ideal catalogs. https://www.cornellpubs.com/old-guns/item_desc.php?item_id=1473

I don't. I got my information many, many years back from Doug Elliott. He was always very generous with providing information to people who were really interested in the subject. I'm unaware of any PDFs available outside of the castpics stuff. There are generally a number of older Ideal handbooks listed on ebay, but many of them are really pricey.

I picked this mold up yesterday! Its as ya see in pics not well cared for but not abused. Just corroded. I washed in white gas and a stiff tooth brush. But it needs a evapo rust soak. So thats where it has been over nite.

More when I pull it out. Later today or tomorrow.

What was his handle? I've forgotten. Good guy, helped me out on some old stuff too.
