Many moons ago I bought my first 410 shotgun. It was a High Standard Deluxe Flight King. 26" ventilated rib W/two beads and "wavy cut" rib light defusing. The receiver had moderate engraving and was fitted with a Gold colored trigger. The stocks where very nice walnut with Checkering. The gun was light short and fast. Shooting hand thrown clays I seldom missed. I was tempted to dring it bird hunting. This year we had a great grouse season there where allot of birds all across this property. I literally flushed a dozen birds in less then a two lile loop with more than a couple dual flushes. Most flushes where at 20+ yards making hits with this lil 410 near impossible for me.
Looking back I believe how and why that gun worked so well where first and of coarse because it fit me well but second because it fit and because it was short light I was able to get on those clays much faster then the 20 or 12's. But this speed wasnt enough because it was still a 410 and the optimal density of its pattern is inside 30 yards. I was quite distraught having known that I wounded at least 1/2 of those flushed. Unacceptable and as a "punishment" knowing I liked that little gun too much to NOT use it I traded it away.
I have looked to replace it on and off for some twenty years. Never seeing another one in person. All Found on GB where priced beyond my willingness to pay.
Thursday a good friend who we have helped for many years his going theu a nasty divorce and having a down syndrome child. He sold off most all Of his collection to make things work. The las ten oso h as been soing great and his boy has grown into a fine young man and is largely self sufficient. (He will never live alone) He txts that he has bought a small
Collection if High Standard Shotguns! My mind immediately flashed to that 410. He mentions a Riot gun a Brush gun and a 22 pump. I commented I thought you said four guns. About then his boy realized it was Uncle CW and the conversation changed to Thomas the Train and Bob d Builder. Today I stopped over with coffee and choco sprinkle donuts. (Boys fav)
We are sitting at the kitchen table and its overwhelmed with these trains and trucks. I had not been there since Christmas and he was anxious to show me the presents he had received. He knew exactly the ones my wife had bought for him. After all that and he calmed my buddy habds me a skinny gun in a silicone sock...
As I remove it he says it badly needs cleaning and knew Id appreciate the task so he had not done it. I set it aside as he also had the Riot gun on the table. Wow I have seen these but this one was as new. 1965 manufacturer near as he figured. The Brush gun has seen much use but is still in fine working order. The 22 looks pretty good but also apparent it was shot a fair amount and not cleaned.
My attention was back on that sock... It was an un It says High Standard and 2.5 & 3" 410. But no model. Marked 410 high standard pump. It has walnut and checkering. It has two beads and a vent rib. But Blued trigger.
Its a gift and I adore it!!
