Go Navy. He can probably get equal to PA with some classes and time after he gets out, if he does.
I just told the folks I had a plane to San Diego and needed a ride to the airport. Weren't too happy about the whole thing but the hug I got when I got out was great. Mom was raised Quaker.

My shooting partner Steve, who is 86, gave his Meachum High Wall to Jim Hart at Hart barrels to rebarrel to .30-30. I think he gave the rifle to him back in May. Hart barrels is only about 45 min from our summer place so I told him I could pick up the rifle for him and bring it back home to save him the 6 hour round trip ride. So, every time I ask Steve about the rifle, he says Jim is waiting on a new blank extractor.

So today, I decided to do a quick search on the web. In about 5 minutes I found two new extractor blanks made my MVA at Wyoming Arms. I called them and George confirmed that he had 2 in stock. I told him I'd probably be calling him back shortly. I called Jim and asked if he'd found an extractor yet. He said no. He's had one on order for about 2 months with no results. I told him I found 2 and would have one shipped to me and then I'd drive it down to his shop and put it into his hot clammy hand. He was happy to hear that and so I called George back and ordered the extractor. Should be here next week. Other good things happened today, too. It was a good day in paradise.

The wife and I just got back from what she was hopping would be her last eye appointment from surgery. Her eye has taken 4 years to get back semi close to normal. But the Eye Dr says she still has a wase to go till she can have here next surgery. She said she was OK with his opinion but she was pretty bummed out all of the way home.

Put on a uniform and the wife and I drove over to the Kansas City MEPS and I swore my younger son into the Navy today. I teach JROTC and have done this for some of my cadets over the years, but I missed doing it for my older son ten years ago, wasn't going to miss this.

I've been retired, but you're technically an officer forever, so they humor an old man and let me do this even though I'm sure it's an inconvenience for them to single out an individual poolee for swearing in. I always used to like to re-enlist Soldiers or present awards and still do, but it's special when it's your own.

Needless to say, his Mom and I are pretty proud of him, not many signing on these days. Good to know you brought up two that would and did.

I wish your son the best and hope he never has to go in harm's way.

I tried to enlist in the Navy, but the recruiter said there was a six months waiting list. I told him I couldn't wait six months, because I had my draft physical two months earlier. He said the Air Force recruiter was next door and there wasn't a waiting list. Opened his door. A few minutes later signed on the dotted line. The rest, as they say, is history.
Service dates 2-2-67 to 4-27-71.
Phan Rang Air Base, Republic of Viet Nam, 6-27-68 to 6-26-69.
No regrets. Would do it all again.

Wow, 6-27-68 . . . I was almost two months into the Marine Corps boot camp at that time. Think I would have rather been with you.
You, too, would have had the privilege and honor of living through the base being attacked 24 times, resulting in over 400 incoming rockets and mortars.

2-2-67, I was almost a year old.
Twenty days later, I turned 19.

Shoveled and wheelbarrowed half a yard of dirt from the back yard to the front yard. Laid down some weed block cloth. Removed the truck's tool box, drove to the garden center and had a petite young lady dump a yard of mahogany colored wood chips in the bed. (Oh, boy, could she handle that front loader! The burliest and toughest operating engineer has nothing on her.) Wheelbarrowed the wood chips to the back yard and spread them out where the half a yard of dirt came from. Started at 0900 and called it quits at 1400. Took two Tylenol. The project is about 2/3 done.

While at the garden center, which is a stone's throw from the airport, two Air Force F-22 Raptors graced us with their goose bump raising sounds of freedom, as they practiced touch-and-goes. Love it, love it, love it! Yesterday, when my wife and I were at there, it was two Navy F-18s touch-and-goers.

Snakeoil...everyone should have a good friend like you!
Thanks. But let me tell you what kind of guy Steve is. I told him I was thinking about shooting F class. He says don't buy anything. I'll set you up so you can try it. Keep in mind, bullets, primers, powder, etc., is almost impossible to find. Next time I see him, he hands me a custom built 6mmBR built on a 700 action. Tells me to treat it like it is mine and do whatever I need to do to make it work for me. I shoot lefthanded, he shoots RH. I rearrange things on the rifle to suit me. Oh, and it has a Nightforce scope on it, too. He also gives me a few hundred rounds of loaded ammo for me to use at 600 yd practice to get a feel for the rifle. Then as the match approaches, he hands me 8 lbs of powder and several hundred Berger and Sierra match bullets as well is match small rifle primers and of course, the best, Lapua 6BR brass. Oh, and the dies to reload.

I shoot the first match and whine about how long it takes to make precision ammo. So next match, I'm in his basement using his $1000 Autotrickler to load for the next match. What a difference. Then when I'm done, he want to take me out for lunch. Needless to say, I paid.

Steve has given me Hadley eyecups, a brand new Mueller scope, a used but superb Weaver scope and he's done similar things for other shooters at the club. The guy is truly a saint. I have a standing joke I use around him. "Careful what you say around Steve. Don't tell him your house burned down because he'll say, "Take my house. I don't need it. I can sleep in the truck."". But in reality, he's really that generous and helpful. And the guy knows how to shoot rifles. I've learned a ton from shooting with him. He'll never argue with anyone or contradict. He's very polite and respectful. But when it is only you and him, he'll say, "Stop listening to all those crazy opinions. I'll tell you what works." And he does and it does.

So, being able to help him out puts a big smile on my face. I don't think that folks do enough nice things for Steve in comparison to the stuff he does for others.

I never did a true itch to shoot F-class. It was fun, but did not truly light my fire to dive in head first with a new rifle, scope, rest, etc.. Maybe some day down the road. Met a bunch of great guys at the matches. But it was more work than it was fun. Although Jim Hart told me to give another tray later on. He said I was drinking thru the firehose and I have to agree.

WOW! I can see why you did a favor for him. Having a friend like that, it's almost impossible to get one up on him. You will be paying him back for the near future. Count your blessings for a friend like that.

Dang Rich you still look darn good in that Uniform.
chuckle i just had a mental image of me trying to fit in mine.... LOL.
it'd sorta fit in most places, but i'm sure it'd be more umm expedient to use some spandex in others.

went down to Pokie with Littlegirl and drunken monkey number-3.
found a couple of deals after working over the discount stores pretty hard.
i don't know what i'm going to do with 4 cases of Quaker Granola bars for sure, but i got them for 3.50 a case.
we found out her little hatchback will hold 8 cases of them and 2 cases of Crackers, plus about 50-24oz cans of iced tea no problem though.
pretty sure the kids ate a 12 count box plus a few strays within 5 minutes of me getting home, so i'll probably get the one box i'm gonna stash in the 4 wheeler.
somehow they managed to force themselves to still come and help eat a 24" pizza, plus have a dinner salad each.

THAT is AWESOME! I didn't get to swear in my youngest (of 5) son, but I DID get to pin MY ABN wings on him as a Legacy!

4-7-67 I took my first breath.

Wish I could have served, but probably was for the best I did not.
Joined up, but the Operational Physician at Benington kicked me out. Physically unfit for duty. Got an ELS. Found out I had bad knees and flat feet that were overlooked during the Intake physical. So took it and bowed out gracefully. Got a small check, and a bus ride home. :(
Don't talk about it much. Infact when people ask, I usually lie and tell them I tried to sign up but they would not take me. Just easier to let it rest at that.
Was one of my most disappointing, embarrassing, moments in my life. Can't be in the infantry if your knees swell and lock up every time you run or march.
But my week of hell, then the 2 weeks in the kitchen while waiting for release, lets me appreciate the sacrifice of those that did serve, a bit more. I have nothing but respect for you veterans..

That's one I got shortly before retiring and pretty snug in the waste. Job requires I wear class Bs most of the time, but about time for another class A coat.

Most of my life in the Army, I never had to worry about weight, rapid metabolism and being active took care of it. Not the case now, and the back getting worse and worse all the time, Staying as active is gonna get harder. Getting old sucks.

The Army is in the process of changingf over to a new dress uniform which looks a lot like the WWII era one. I like it and probably should switch into it, but it's pretty expensive to do that, and the wear out date for this one isn't for several more years. Add to that, the cadets will most likely still be in this one for several years after that and I kind f want to look like them when we're all in it.

I had completely forgotten Hart was still in business, much less that they were down in Lafayette!!! Good thinking man, your bud owes you a lunch!

I think I might actually fit in my old uniform, but the shoulders, chest and seat of my pants would be all baggy now and the buttons on the shirt across the belly might be snug! Everything goes straight to my belly these days, which is why I couldn't help your drunken monkeys eat those Granola bars- and I LOVE those things! At least the ones without chocolate. I don't think they have a real expiration date, kinda like Twinkies and Zingers, the quality might suffer, but they don't mould- ever!
