Busy day. First made a bullet tray to fit in a 100 round MTM ammo box for my shooting partner Steve. It hold the bullets for breech seating. Poor guy was using flimsy styrofoam ammo box inserts cut down so he could grab the bullets.
Then took the ink jet cartridges from his printer to a guy in the next town over that refills them. He let me come back into his shop and showed the entire process to me. Spent close to an hour teaching me about inkjet cartridges and what a rip-off they are. A cartridge that may coast you $20 - $30 dollars has about a penny's worth of ink inside. The HP cartridge was designed about 30 years ago and has not changed. So, they have zero overhead in what they sell you today. It's probably about 1000% profit.
Back home and redesigned and rebuilt the breech seater Steve had made for his .32-40. It will now hold a bullet while you insert the breech seater into the chamber and then seat it to the exact same depth every time. It's also adjustable.
Lastly, got a call from Kevin, the guy to whom we gave Steve's rifle after it quit working again on Friday. He said it was full of powder again. I know what causes this. If Steve removes an unfired case, the ejector spits it out with such force that the little foam wad he uses to hole the powder in the case comes out and with it, the powder and falls down into the action. Kevin finished the rifle and a friend who lives by him is going to bring i to the match tomorrow. I will then remove the ejector parts and make it into an extractor only so this cannot happen in the future. No permanent mods required. Just have to remove 4 parts.
It's been so long since I loaded fixed ammo for a match that it was a bit of a PITA to do. And I think I might have had a senior moment. I swore I'd been shooting 17.5 of 2400 in that rifle and that is what I loaded. But I checked a few notes and it appears I've been shooting 17.0 gr. Well, worst that can happen is my scope settings will be off a tad. Who knows, may shoot better. More powder normally means better ES and SD numbers. We'll find out tomorrow. Nothing like experimenting at a match. Geeshhhh.... what a maroon. Fortunatey, there is no Mercedes in the prize pool.
