Just finished moving the safe. Took some very special equipment and an 800 mg. Ibuprofen. Going to be paying for that for the next 4 days, maybe more.

I'm not sure which element is the most difficult in this hobby field--moving the gun safe, or moving the lead stash. I am hoping for a Choice "C"--None Of The Above.

Moving the lead stash can happen a few pounds at a time, over a period of time. The safe has to get moved in one piece and if it's like mine, even the 3-0 doors and hinges have to come out.

The safe ”can” be moved in pieces. It just may not reassemble the same way ever again.
you should understand the fiver method of disassembly Ian, it often involves torches and such.

Ian,
Congratulations! I totally missed that whole part of this thread!:embarrassed:
Looks like you now are on a roll! If he is half as cute as that little girl..... you folks are going to have your hands full later in life!

Been too busy to post much but just for grins and giggles here are a couple of photos. The first one is a shot of the 12" x 36" Harbor Freight lathe sitting in my BIL's garage. If we can strike a deal it will end up in our new shop. I took photos from all angles so i could have shots of the ID plate, power req's, etc. It will probably end up wearing a collet chuck.

The second photo is just some machinist porn, we were running low on blank Lee type dies so I had the apprentice turn 24 feet of 1144 steel into dies. He will start doing the backface tomorrow. CNC is wonderful, it takes less than 30 seconds to cut the 7/8-14 external thread.

Keith, that reminds me I need to place another order for Lee blanks, but gotta pay some doctor bills first.

We have our hands pretty full now, I can't imagine how couples can have more than two kids and survive. They must have a lot more family/friends to help out than we do.

No Ian, they just less of a social life.
My baby bro has 4, last one in HS now. He and wife always made conferences for all, were involved in their activities, and tended to have hobbies that supported the kids. It can be done but it takes teamwork and dedication.

My wife and I had just the one but it certainly led us to be involved in her life at the expense of our own. Wouldn’t have it any other way.

Ian, I'll send you a couple as a baby gift, you can make sure this batch is OK. I think I have your personal addy on file here.

Keith, I don't know what to say other than thank you! I know your stuff is spot on spec and the class of fit is perfect for all the tools I have, but I'll be happy to double-check a sample from this batch anyway ;)

I missed out on your SPCA donation offer last time, iirc it was just before the holidays and discretionary money was tight here, but if you ever do that again I'll do my best to get in an order whether I need any blanks or not. It isn't like the stuff goes bad if sprayed with LPS 3 or Zep Linebacker (or even dipped in thinned LLA) and if the PTB are willing I'll be using your products for years to come.

Knew I should have called fiver to help move the safe, which by the way, weighs the same as my mill.

Keith, while I whole heartedly agree with you that NC is cat's meow, I've done similar operations in close to the same time frames with a geometric die head. The drawback to the geometric die head is the cost of the chasers.

Agree 100% Smokey. there are faster ways to cut threads than single pointing them, especially smaller diameters. And for long runs on manual machines there is no better way to thread than a self-opening die head. The nice thing about CNC is the versatility and relative low cost and with full-profile tooling the threads can come out beautiful.

I'm not sure I'll rerun my help-the-animals offer this Christmas, but only because we will still be moving in and getting used to our new digs and I just don't want to over-promise and under-deliver. But a year from now for sure.

I've been happily out of touch with the world for the last two days, while my son-in-law and I took Front Sight's two-day Defensive Handgun Course. I had a lot of fun, learned new shooting techniques and unlearned many bad ones.

Congrats Ian. Looks like you and the wife did real well, and now you have a reason to buy him a new gun! Won't be long before he's asking to borrow the truck!

Fiver,
I know the feeling. Sunday I took a four man crew in to remove 13 beaver dams. The center 1.5 miles was "canoeing" through slough grass that was flooded. Push pull, get out, push pull get out! Moved some serious water, so the ride back was way easier. Snowed on us twice, rained on us twice, and wind blew from two directions, all in 9 hours, but no bugs!! Should have been a duck.

Brad, that's the thing, giving them the devotion and attention they deserve. Having kids is a humbling experience will definitely can cure self-centeredness (is that even a word?) and a host of other character flaws if you dedicate yourself to being the best you can be. My wife and I still make a point to schedule "us" time and give each other breaks for "me" time so we don't forget why we got married in the first place and who we still are as individuals, we feel that is especially important for the long-term. Learning, and now re-learning how to balance all that is the challenge.

Nice "little" lathe Keith. Don't want to write this too loud? wifeypoo may hear it but, have been looking at smaller lathes, again. Don't "need" another but..... if one comes along for beer money,it might follow me home. If it was broken, all the better.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Har! That's funny Ian. "Me" and "us" time! Right! Best of luck with that! "Me" time will be when you're at work. "Us" time will be the trips between drop off and pick up spots for the kids. Your social life will be meeting other parents in the diaper isle at Walmart or talking at school functions. The rest of your life belongs to the kids. ;)
