Spent 4 hours yesterday with my friend Jon at his gun club and hour and a half from here to do testing for a future ELR .22 shoot. We shot at randomly placed targets starting with a 1" swinger at 55 yards, a 2" swinger at 101, a 3" at 175, a 4" at 198,a 5" at 237, a 6" at 256, an 8" at 277, and finally a 10" at 307. All of the distances were ranged after the targets were placed. Ultimately, there will be 16 targets total and each shooter will fire 3 shots per target, in groups of 4 targets with 4 shooters firing at a time. The four groups of targets will be painted different colors. You will draw a colored poke chip to determine which group of targets you are shooting and get after it. If you manage a first shot hit you get 3 points with 1 point awarded for each subsequent hit for a total possible score of 80.
We shot prone and boy that's less than fun as you get older. I think I have bruising on my left ribs this morning. I had numbers out to 200 and I did well until I got to the 237 and after that it was guessing and trial and error. We also stuck an 16"x 36" piece of steel at 400 yards and I managed to hit that 3 out of 10. Just for extra fun we had a gusty variable wind that collapsed the umbrella we had shading the shooting mat a couple of times. The range is in a north facing valley in the coulee country near LaCrosse, WI and the winds are, interesting.
I shot what is basically a Kidd Super Grade 10-22 with a Leupold Mark AR Mod-1 6x18 scope with a Mil-Dot reticle and +20 MOA in the base and another +20 MOA in my Burris Signature Zee rings. I am nearly bottomed out with my 50 yard zero, but it is a perfect 50 yard zero and that gives me all of the elevation in the scope to go up. I was able to dial all the way to 400 without having to resort to hold over. I was shooting Eley Target in a yellow box, a lower grade Eley product.
My friend Jon shoots a Federsen barrel on a Ruger 10-22 action with a Vortex 30 m/m scope. I think he has close to + 70 MOA in elevation and he uses a lot of hold under, (9 MOA?) at 50. Jon was using SK Pistol Match Special for ammo. We both have Victor Titan stocks on our rifles. This is a type of shooting and a type of rifle I never envisioned becoming interested in, but, I'm hooked.
Just this moment received an e-mail from Jon. He says his neck and lower back hurt this morning. We may have to shoot this from the benches. Jon and I are in about the best physical shape of the bunch of Geezers we shoot with.
