If you were going to start from scratch and build this :

  • What action would you use ?
  • What barrel profile ?
  • What barrel length ?
  • What cartridge would you chamber the barrel in ?
  • What twist would you select ?
  • What style of stock would you select ?
  • What other refinements would you want on this rifle ?
  • ( Last minute addition, your choice of optics also )
This should be interesting ! ! :):):)

Cost is not an issue?
Have it built up by an honest to goodness BR smith. Use a BR action like a Stolle. I would go with a 30 BR. 20 inch light varmint contour barrel.
Twist, use a 12 and figure on a 180-200 gr bullet.

Plan on spending 2500 bucks. Gonna need another couple hundred for the right dies to really get the most of it..

Ultimate, or Realistic?

I'm going with Realistic.

Savage 10 w/AccuTrigger
Heavy Varmint profile
21-3/4"
.30 BR w/.5° per side throat taper
5R, 1:11 or 1:12
Boyd's "4x4" heavy BR stock (ask Brad)
Dual steel pillar bedding, fill magazine well, plug bottom of receiver, heavy recoil lug, fill barrel threads, bed scope mounts.

Not much of a bench rest guy myself.

Mine would go more like....
Custom ar308, 12 or 14 twist, jard trigger, zeiss glass, & a nice bipod to make my own bench in the woods and field edges I frequent.

Oooo, & a buncha mags.

I'm biased I guess .

Money is no object .

I'd start with a 700/40X action.
Kreiger 3 groove 30 cal 1-16 , 1.25 by 26"
Topped off in Ziess .
It would take me some research for a trigger but I'm pretty sure it would be some sort of a set trigger in the 5# to set it just barely feel it before it's gone .
The stock would have to be pretty out side . But inside it would be bedded to a matched cradle steel bed pre fitted to the action . The the stock fitted to the cradle then filled with Devcon 1010 .

I'm inclined to lean towards a cartridge best suited for a particular range but in almost certain that it would follow the long taper ,long shoulder ,long neck theme of 30-30, 30XCB , 300 H&H . Possibly starting with a 308 length 473 rim , perhaps like the 300 stopped at 2.1 " so that in 2000 rounds or so it could be moved out to the 7.62x57 30 XCB , then deep cut to 2.5" then to 300 H&H . Then be lopped off and started over again with just 24" .
I would of course have the work done by a good friend in Conway AR to ensure that the tolerance for my needs is exceeded .

I would probably start with a Bat or stole action and go with a 30" 1x13 twist barrel.
the 308X1.5 would get enough powder behind the boolit to move it out to 1-300yds easy enough.
a Nightforce X55 BR scope would provide enough sight.
as far as a stock I think it should just sit on the bench on it's own with minor adjustment toggles built in so I don't have to fiddle about with a front or rear rest.
I don't know if I could shoot better than the .2's with such a set up but I would like to find out.

I'm with Harter..

40x action,Kreiger brrl.

Make it a 6mm Rem.Leupold glass,run through our shop.I reckon we'd build a stock for it?But seriously,would be way more fun running a factory 40$ POS,flexi flyer stock...camo dejour.

or rechamber a 300BLK AR15 barrel with a 1-8 twist to 308x1.5 and use 7.62x39 load data to start. The cartridge change will require replacing the 5.56 bolt to a .458 SOCOM bolt and you can either buy dedicated straight feed magazines at $24-$40 each or reuse standard AR15 magazines but with limited capacity due to the larger case (4 in a 10rnd mag, 8 in a 20 rnd ( prefer to load 5 in the 20s) and 14 in a 30 round magazine but the last two are a bit stiff to get into my military aluminum mags)
That said, in a 16 inch fast-twist (1-8) carbine gas length AR barrel, I'm hoping it will be sweet little woodwalker carbine with 150-190gr lead bullets.

I’m not a bench rest guy either, so I would stick with my Marlin 336 SS in .30-30 and use the rest of the money chasing pheasant in Sd. The next couple years.
