30-30 powders

Basically it's a guideline that says don't reduce the load density below 80% volume due to SEE risk and so forth with double-base rifle powders.

I think I gained 6" in height from the mud but did get to shoot the 30/30 with rx7. Pretty good first try, 145 PB 16gr red PC, 185GC 17gr rx7, BLL & red PC. From front sand bag and shoulder, 50 yds, 100 was a swamp. PCd were loaded a tad short. THe 145 group looks strange, guess I wiggled. Did pretty good with the 308 carbine also.

Cast bullet shooters don't normally think of Bullseye being used in the 30-30.
But like JW has stated earlier , Red Dot and Bullseye can both be very useful.

Here is 5 shots fired at 100 yards with my T/C Contender , Super 14 in 30-30 with Bullseye.

Wow, nearly MOA from a pistol even with the bullets yawing all over the place. I'd be pretty ecstatic about the group, and go back to the loading bench and do some head-scratching about what was making those PB bullets yaw so much. I get the same thing from some of my blackouts with heavy subsonic bullets when the bullets are a scoshe too small....but they still hang together in a respectable group just like yours.

If you discount the " low 5th round ", the other four are pretty tight considering they are being fired from a T/C Pistol at a full 100 yards with a 2X Burris pistol scope mounted on the Super 14 T/C. I felt certain that the " low round " was me not the load or the pistol. Notice the bullets were sized .310". That pistol has never shot very well with a .311 cast bullet.

That particular bullet is the original SAECO # 315 and was gas checked.

I remember the day that I shot that group.
My friend was looking through the spotting scope while I fired the group.
When the last shot was fired he said......." Well, you just shot a tighter group with a handgun at 100 yards than I can with my rifle at 100 yards. "

Yep, that group would embarrass a lot of people shooting rifles with 9-power glass.

One very impt thing to note here.
I've never done that twice .
I shot that one group then " I quit while I was ahead ".

Well Ben,
As You say most folks always think "Rifle Powders" for rifles with cast! Why think that way when you are not even close to loading like jacketed bullet when using cast? Last weekend I put 5 .333" cast bullets ( from a well worn 98 8mm Mauser) into .375" center to center hole....well that was my best the rest were at about .5" per 5 shots This with 8.1 grains red dot. I have shot this rifle about 50 times trying all the "Advised" Rifle powder loads which where were a total waste of time!

An older gentleman walked by me at the range one day.
He noticed that I was shooting a 30-06 Springfield.
The old man asked " What kind of powder are you using ? "
I said Bullseye, I thought the old man was going to have a heart attack.

It actually made me chuckle to read a couple of old hands remarking that everyone seems to want to use rifle powder for rifle loads. Ten years ago I was pulling my hair out because of exactly the opposite. Virtually everyone treated IMR 4227 as a "slow" powder and considered 1800 fps "high velocity".

Looking to load up some moderate plinking loads for my Win 92 and Savage 340.

Since this was the OP's original inquiry I felt that what I offered, to be exceptionally accurate, Low to medium, 30-30 loads with the 165 RD.
I don't know if I qualify "to do a lot of shooting" but on any given weekend.... 2 day range time will be at the least 200to 300 rounds.
My loads are easy on my body and shoot far more accurately then any "4 numbered" powders I have been instructed to use with cast bullets in the past 10 years!

My plinking 30-30 loads are also what I use for everything but hunting with it. A 165 RD and 16 or so gr of 2400. Does what needs doing and I can keep my reloading simple.

I like simple. Find a load that works and just keep using it.

I need to get more into this mindset. One gun, one load. Sometimes I get lost in “testing”

yes it is.
I keep a couple of powder measures set and locked down, most of the time I just re-fill and load from them.
it's surprising how many different cartridges will take 9grs of unique, or 18grs of 2400 and shoot just about as good as a 'worked' load does.
