Did anyone do any hunting with BP ?

I missed this past hunting season completely. I never fired one round while up north. Nothing. Did not even buy an archery tag.
I did sit out in the river bottoms a couple times with my camara but the corn was not yet cut so the corn crunchers were still out enjoying the safety of the cornfields.

So anyone put any meat on the table with BP this past hunting season ? You can be the first key jabber to claim the bragging rights.

Our hunting & fishing licenses are lifetime, the year one turns 65 years old. I hunt bucks only, though didn't see anything nice enough to harvest. Our muzzleloading season runs during the middle of the archery season.............10 days in mid-October.

Took this one, last season with 54 caliber Renegade.

Shoulder replacement surgery cut my rifle season out, this season.

Muzzle loader was my main method for quite a few years, but it's been ten years now since I killed one with black powder. Our Muzzle loader season is in late September, nice time to be out, usually, just been too hot the past few years.

Carried a ML a couple days for first time ever. Based on cam pics, just missed having one cross in front of me.

I carried a flintlock rb gun for a week. I never found a legal buck willing to cooperate.

I shot a three point with my CVA in-line this past fall. We have been eating good all winter.
He almost walked into me. Shot him at seven yards.
But, I was using Pyrodex, so this may not count.

It's all I use! Preference for Pyrodex "P"...............that way I only have to keep one kind around.

A 100 grains of Pyrodex P was my load, it worked for me. P also gives a slight velocity advantage over the 2F.

IMG_1863.pngIMG_1602.jpegIMG_1584.jpegI had a great muzzle loader season. I took my #2 buck ever.
As many if you know, I lost my wife of 25 years last Sept. after a short illness I completely missed last season caring for her as well as personal health issues. I was apprehensive but my buddy convinced me and Im glad he did.

A couple days before Christmas three deer came out below me and worked there way under my stand. One was a little skipper 4 point and about the time I decided to take him I noticed movement across the ridge. It was HORNS I saw! They are bone colored and stood out boldly. He walked across the flat and up the ride to the flat I was on eyeing the does under me. I took him at about 30/35 yards head on into shoulder. He dropped at the shot and rolled over. That was 07:45. I first saw him about 07:30... Later when going thru my phone pics there was a screen snap shot @ 07:35 on my phone. I know she was with me taking this buck.

The buck has one of the most beautiful faces I have ever scene. In having him mounted.

I wish that Texas had a separate muzzleloader season either before or after gun season.
I bought a .50 cal CVA Bobcat NOS cheap in Kingman Arizona last year and I’ve put a Burris FF3 on it. I just haven’t gotten around to getting it lined out.
I killed a nice 8 point with my Lyman .54 pistol at 40 feet a few years back and it was exciting!
I’m using FFFG DuPont while I’ve got it, but have no trouble using Pyrodex afterwards.

Here in Pennsylvania We have 2 Black Powder seasons: The Early ( Fake one as I call it ) allows Inline modern guns and conicals)
And the "Real one" Late season! Starts the day after Christmas ...Antique season ! Flintlock and round ball only!!! 3 weeks either sex of deer
I usually only go out for this one but this year, unfortunately, I was plagued by a bout of Bad Sciatica so I had to miss it! Wish I knew that my wife could have fixed my back back then with deep massage as she finally did in February!

PA flintlock season (after Christmas) has come a long way from round ball only. in the early '80s, the game commission let us hunters use maxi balls. then sometime after the inline season, they let us use sabots/bullets and peep sights in flintlock. they also let us Pyrodex pellets. i used a left-hand FL CVA Hawkens in 50cal. i used RB and maxi balls for years. now i use a .429" 250gr penta hp or 280gr WFN with a sabot and 70gr of Goex 2FG. in early season i use a TC Encore in 50cal with 250gr penta hp/280gr WFN with 70gr of Goex 2FG. i didn't go for muzzleloader this year, both seasons.

PA regs
Flintlock Muzzleloader Season • Flintlock ignition, single-barrel long gun, 44 caliber or larger, or 50 caliber or larger handgun, using single- projectile ammunition. It is unlawful to use telescopic sights. Peep sights are permitted.

my brother had a Traditions pellet rifle and it was a piece of junk. every time he shot it, it hang fired or it would go woosh with a puff of smoke and that was all. he still had sabot/bullet and 3 pcs Pyrodex pellets and a fired frizzen. i had a Lyman flintlock that hang fired 6 out 10 times, my CVA is like a smokeless rifle, the instant you pull the trigger, it fires. i got the CVA at an auction for $125 about 5 or 6 years ago.

Maybe next year. Last one I killed with BP was with a .44 revolver and greased round ball at just under 25 yards, but that was a loooooong time ago.

For the most part, I still-hunt (a friend described it as bow-hunting with a gun); unless I'm playing with a new rifle, guiding, or control shooting, my flintlocks are my main big game guns. (I did use my old Belgian sxs shotgun for a few years after I gave my Bess to a friend--I've probably hunted more with that old Bess than any other gun I've ever owned.) Work got in the way so I missed hunting last year.

The year before that I used an original Oerter from a friend's collection to take an antelope. Twice I've managed to fill mule deer tags using original Hawkens. Mostly though I used my Bess or the flintlock rifle I built my senior year in high school.

i knew a couple of old guys that liked to hunt small game with a double barrel cap lock BP shotgun. this was 30 years+ ago, i imagine that they are in the shooting range in the sky. does anybody shoot a cap lock shotgun? i'm just wondering, it sounds like fun.

Joe, my shooting buddy, bought one of the Indian SXS caplocks in 12 guage some time ago. After shooting some skeet with it, we have shot round ball loads at sage rates. The right barrel is pretty accurate up to 50 yards.

My favorite hunting is Woodcock with a 20 gauge smoothbore English Flintlock That 42 " barrel just follows those buggers on lift off!
I do miss bird hunting... I agree 20g but for me its my Grouse special. Timberdoodles are fun shootin but lousy eatin!!
