i think.

I think i am about done trying to make a rifle into 3-4 rifles.
the 30-06 is for sure capable of shooting bullet weights from 90grs up to about 250grs. and from 900 fps up to near 3,000 fps.
but then what?
which load did I use last time?
how many clicks down or up is it to this load?
now I have to go to the range before I can take the rifle out for messing around or for hunting.
I think I am supplied with enough rifles to let the 0-6 be an 0-6 with J-bullets and a single load,'and the other 0-6 be a cast shooter with 170gr bullets and the third one shoot the 150gr cast bullets.
one load each, one drop sheet each.
if I need slower I have a 308 or 5 30-30's and a pair of 300's.
they really don't need 3 loads either, 1 per rifle is sufficient.
now that might sound boring to some, but I think this is the approach i am going to have to take from now on.

Most of my guns end up getting fed a single load for the majority of their use. Might be why I own so few moulds? I find soemthing that works and just run with it.

Fiver,
I'm on this merry go round also. Even though I keep good records of my loads ( along with all targets shot) switching back and forth still requires work and becomes a new project or learning experience!

Kinda wish I could develop just one or two loads per rifle, but
alas and alack, just always have to try for something else. Like
my cat, I am just curious I guess.

Things have worked out for me like they have for Paul, and for much the same reason. However, I'm narrowing it down too these days. I don't load supers for the 300s, that's what the .30-30 is for. If I need more than that, I take the .308s, one load for all and a sub load for the one with threads, with two drop tables taped to the stock. All my handgun ammo is getting narrowed down to one pet load for each, and loaded in bulk quantity.

The thing that irritates me the most, and I'm beginning to fix now that I have a lathe, is having 3-5 guns that I like in a given caliber that I also like, and having to segregate brass, bullets, and loads for each one because of chamber variances. Might as well have five different chamberings, it would be less confusing.

Ian, I only have two chambering with multiple guns. Now feeding a third 357 and the two revolvers eat the same ammo now that I reamed the throats on the new one. The Marlin gets different ammo as it won't shoot but one bullet. That ammo will work in revolvers, I just don't shoot much 357 in the revolvers.
45 Colt is even easier. The Ruger has tighter chambers than the Marlin and they both like the same load.
Sounds like you need looser chambers Ian.....

I shoot the same 45-270-SAA (285gr) in my 45LC Seville, 454 FA, and 45WM LAR Grizzly. I have been wondering about plugging one of those into a 1911 over 3 grains of Bullseye ;)

Fiver, get a savage long action, poor mans switch barrel. I have a few too many actually but for the money they are hard to beat and harder to walk away from.

I thought about the switch barrel thing and the T/C thing.
I even tried just buying everyone in the family a 7x57 but ended up with a 7 ICL, a 7 Ackley, 2 standards and a 7,5 swiss.
heck I bought 3 rugers in 44 special at the same time trying to simplify things.
that just made it worse.

I spent most of my early years developing loads and testing accuracy in various rifles and handguns. Now I do less experimenting and enjoy shooting the loads that work in my guns. Getting to the point of one or two loads for each caliber, and I'm actually shooting more than I did back then.

I bought that Bergara as a hunting rifle with J words but I'm real tempted to shoot cast in it. I had kinda decided to use the Ruger Hawkeye for that....

LOL! Trying to get all my levers down to one single load that shoots best/fastest, set the sights then pick up gun/ammo and go and shoot dead on.

I think I like tinkering too damn much. I'll never settle on "A" load and just roll with it. I know me. This will probably never happen for 80% of the guns I own. I get a new mold, or get bored and want to try something new......NEVER happen! LOL!

the lever guns were the ones I found the easiest.
I started with red-dot and worked up towards 2400.
when I found a load that shot on top of the sights at 50 and real close to the same at 100 with a click up on the ramp I stopped.
almost all of them ended up using unique or herco or something similar.

My current folly is a 45-70 Marlin . It shoots that 458193@417gr so well (compared to other bullets tried with limited workups) and it is of course a natural bullet for the 45-70 because .....well it was always for just a 45 BP rifle with 1 or 2 chamber reamers ......
It's just not the one I want to shoot , it's only available in a single , I have several other moulds that are multiple cavity moulds and now that it works like it's supposed to I like the MP better . Now if I could just get it to shoot as well .......
I could fix the stock on the Raptor and start working on that again .....535 subsonic suitable for everything in North America in a Mauser action .......

Meanwhile the Marlin shoots below the sights with everything more spirited than moderate TD loads , it likes the 380 gr HB 462-420 at 460 -414/380 .

223 , 6.8 and 06 are the only duplicate rifles I have and while the 223s talk and share the others may as well be trying to put 06' in the 6.8 ......
I forgot the 45 Colts the rifles play nice , the pistols share Schofield and the pistols will feed the rifles ....... It all ends there . I have to have a hot load for the Ruger Colts , Schofield for the Smith , although that load is pretty spicy compared to the OM , and a non max Colts load or a special order super heavy for the rifles .

Thankfully theres an old Savage 3030 that I can just throw whatever bullet I have the most of on hand with 8 Unique or 20? IMR 4350 and go make 2" circles within 3-4" of the sights .

I am lucky on my 44-40, 44 SPC and 45 Colts so far. Same for 45 ACP with a single exception. Pretty much everything works. Can't say the same for 38 SPC/357.

I have loads that work ok in same cartridges. I have yet to find a generic load that works great in guns of the same caliber.
Buddy has a "magic" load. Book data, so I tried it. It was ok, but not as good as what several rifles and a pistol were truly capable of or liked.
I have specific loads and techniques for getting the most out of several. For the most part all of my ammo is specific to a certain gun.
Yes it can be maddening at times. Get to the range with gun and ammo and it may not even fit. I bought a label maker and that has helped.
