if you have 2400 18-19 grs and a LR primer should work just fine.
make sure to orient the base of the cartridge down when placing it in the rifle.
you'll shoot better groups that way.
after 19 grs you can use a pistol primer and maintain or even gain accuracy but that window shrinks quickly.

it would probably be easier if you tell us what powders you do have and we can give you our better [or most recommended] loads to start with.
I've even used H-110 and stuff like AA-1680 in the 0-6.

Question as I was checking prices for Reloader 7 smokeless powder. I was offered 16 lbs of IMR4198 at $175.00 per 8 lbs delivered or I should say picked up.

The Lyman 4th addition casting handbook has this powder for multiple loads.

So it IMR4198 is so good why hasn't anyone mentioned it. I'm afraid to use it.

What do you think of IMR4198 vs reloaded 7.

Don'y be afraid to use it..it's a good powder..just not a great powder...my opion

I keep a pound or two around....

Reloader 7 meters better...and is easier in my experience to obtain sub MOA groups..

4198 can be a "great" powder.IME,and am using right now in my 7-08,.....it has a narrow'ish band for accuracy.Find the node through testing and it's mucho joy.Let the weather change,or change something in the rifle,or otherwise disturb the tune and you're looking at the powder with that cockhead dog look.

I found it gives VG accuracy in .223,and 22-250.The recoil pulse is a little "snappy",vs a much more gentle push/shove if say,4895.Meaning,have a lite rig shooting off too tight of fr bag,and you have your hands full.BUT,shot from field positions, things can be different.

Just goes downhill from there, because we all have different styles and methods of testing.I've got a CB tackdriver 700V 6mm that doesn't like 4198....on the heavy rest.Does better off Bud's bags.

30-06 = 4895 here. These are sporting rifles with big loads and need the softer pulse to manage recoil.

4198 will work.
its one of those in between powders.
in between 4227 and H-322.
4227 doesn't need a filler.
and you better be using one with the 322 and cast loads.
4198 probably does better with one in the larger cases but would do well in the smaller cases without one.
it works pretty darn good in the 44-40 as a black powder pressure/speed duplicator.

I have about 7-8 lbs of 4198 here and use it in a few applications.
I like it in the 32 Winchester and it would probably be useful in the 375 win.
maybe one day I will get a 7.62 X 39 bolt action rifle and I will for sure use it there.

I use the H-variety in .223 with cast. Also 45/70 and 45/90 with lighter bullets, it is consumed faster during the burn than RX-7 due to being single-base, so there is less area under the pressure curve for the same peak pressure as RX-7 in a given application. 4198 is like most powders, it excels where it excels and is so-so to crappy elsewhere.
