Loading for my Cimmeron "Evil Roy" .45Colt

I bought this a few years ago. I've always wanted an 1873 Colt Peacemaker, just never wanted to drop the coin for one.

I came across the ER by Cimmeron and thought it was a pretty good representation of the Colt.

I have not done a lot of testing with this revolver. The only mold I have is the RCBS 45-270-SAA

I have only loaded this bullet with one load to date. Sized to .452" and rolled in two coats of BLL and loaded over 8.0gr of Universal.

Today I loaded 50rnds with same bullet but over 7.0gr of Hercules Unique.

Brass is once fired WW, WW LPP

Alloy IIRC is air cooled WW+2% tin

Nice looking revolver and load. How does she shoot?

Very nice! Handloader issue 246 has a good write up on that bullet. 3 pressure levels of load data. It is online if you google it.

Yeah, ummm, you tried a different load why?
That is a great load. I would be casting a bunch of bullets so I could load a thousand rounds or so.
Oh, nice shooting too.

I am shooting the Lee 250 over W231. Using that powder for my pair of Uberti SAA clones in 44-40 and 45 Colt.

You know how it is Brad. Bored at the loading bench looking to play around with something new. That's all.

WACO, that is what the hobby is about! Otherwise we would all be loading Bullseye from 2.7 to 5.0 grains and shooting wonder groups from every pistol! Best wishes, Ric

I'm odd that way. I tend to find a load and stick with it. Now the father in law, he tinkers. He will take 50 rounds of a cartridge to the range and those 50 rounds are loaded with 4 different bullets.
If the Unique shoots near that we'll buy lots of those powders and start loading ammo. That load deserves to be shot. A bunch.

I need to read that article. For an SAA clone it's my understanding that 7 of Universal and 8 of Unique would be max for each respective powder. My pet load for years was 7.8 grains Universal behind 250-260-grain bullets, but I've backed off to 7.2 since doing more research.

OK, read the article, plugged in data to QL (no RCBS 280 but used the 305 SWC, shortened the bullet length a little, reduced weight to 270 grains, and set to the OAL listed in the article). Prediction data shows between 19,000 and 20,000 peak pressure at 1/2" of bullet travel for 8.0 grains of Universal. 6.7 is bumping the 14,000 SAA maximum. 8.0 Unique shows 16,000. With the cylinder throat and barrel gap leakage who knows what's really going on, but I thought I'd put this out there anyway, for what it's worth.

Also, for what it's worth, I have shot countless loads using 9.0 grains of Unique in a small-frame Ruger New Vaquero. Workin' them angels overtime? Maybe, maybe not.

I put a few of the 7gr Unique loads through the gun. I can roll a soda can at 20 yards.
I'm loading some now with 6.7gr of Titegroup.
Years ago I loaded some with 6.0gr of Titegroup and they clocked in at 775fps
These new loads may do in the 850 neighborhood?
I'll get to shoot them over the holiday weekend when we go out to the desert and camp for 5 days.
Oh yeah! I got a new cross draw holster for this thing to!
I'll get a pic or two up.

I grabbed one while they were on sale awhile back at Midway. I think it was only $45 or so. I like the cross draw riding around in the truck. very comfortable.

I like cross draw holsters too.
on a 4 wheeler or a horse, or when just doing stuff they are more out of my way.

I had a nice worked over Cimmaron years back, it was a Bisley model and accurate as all get out.
it had a thing about not wanting any other primer than Federal, but it would shoot for sure.
I ended up selling it and getting a pair of USFA's.

Guilty as charged! I am a tinker'er as Brad says. Know it would be smart to stay with one accurate load, and I do load a bunch of what is accurate. However, I will always tinker around with new powders, new bullets, changes in primers etc. Sort of always looking for a better mouse trap don't ya know? That is particularly true of revolver ctgs, and the older I get the more I seem to be shooting revolvers. Of course, just got a new Sig P320, and that deserves a bit of load tinkering I think.
