Lubricator Sizer Die Question.....

My partner had a mind for remembering things that I couldn't. He passed away 21 years ago, and I have decided to start casting bullets again. I have 2 Lyman 450 Lubricator Sizers (one, I just picked up yesterday at a pawn shop for $15.00 WITH a 358 sizer and top punch!).

Anyway, I'm wondering if my old brain is still clicking along. I know that some of the sizer dies and top punches are interchangeable, but am not sure if I have the right information stored away. IF I recall. Lyman, RCBS and H&I would all work in the Lyman 450. Am I correct?

Thanks in advance,

There have been a few RCBS dies that were a little too long when the bevel was cut on the bottom so you might only catch a few threads when they are used in the Lyman presses. Keep that in mind if you have a problem with that so you will avoid stripping the threads for the retaining nut. The term H&I die is the Lyman term and also used for the same parts on the RCBS dies in normal conversation.

All of my dies that I have are all older Lyman dies. I was just curious in case I run into a pawn shop buy at some point. I will be sure and keep this in mind.

Thank you all,

The RCBS dies can be a little bit larger at the bottom and really wedge in there tight. I've had to sand down a couple of them a thousandth or two to get them to fit my 45s and 450. Lyman held remarkable bore hole tolerances through the years, to within a thousandth of an inch.

Hummm . So we use a BPGS or one of the Ballistic Products brush wads and just coat up a .690 until it shoots well .....you may be on to something . I don't know why nobody is doing RB and collar buttons and not making a big deal out of it . The BP guys ask but remember they'd have to lube anyway .

I'm about to try some BLL'd round balls in my .45 Colt with Titegroup Was going to PC them and might yet since the balls are a little small (.4515"l. The groove is .448" and cylinder throats .4525" so we'll see.....

If you wanted to bump the cast ball between a flat ram and a flat top punch, that would expand the diameter of the ball. Then either PC or TL and size to throat diameter. This would result in basically a RF nose with a short distance of parallel sides for crimping. The weights will all be the same, but there might be a little difference in the length of the bearing surface on the sides of the ball. You will only be out a little time if you try it.

I do something similar with #3 and #4 buck sized in the correct die for 22 cal and 243 cal "Rat Loads". The only difference is I start with the larger ball so can skip the expanding compression. I also install a wax check directly under the projectile. Have we "drifted" far enough yet?

Fruit?

Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit
Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

I heard that on the radio while playing chess.

That covered most of those topics.
