Memorial Day Gift

Somehow I was so lucky as to catch a bacterial infection in my sinuses and got a horrible case of strep throat, all at once, on memorial day! After seeing the doctor on tuesday I got an antibiotic, Levaquin 500 mg, I hate this stuff... for 2 hours after taking it I feel nauseous and dizzy. Now the stuff works, I am about to take dose 3 and already my throat is almost back to normal, the side effects for me are horrid, it is like dropping little 500 mg nukes in the guts. IDK if it is the strength of the antibiotic that isn't doing well with me or the drug itself, but I plan on avoiding it if at all possible from here forth.

Any of the cillins ,pene, amoxi any of them ,make me break out in acne . Full blown 8th grade pizza face . I feel for you .

Zithromax has been the ticket for the last few sinus/lung bugs for me . Zithromyison (that's what it sounds like anyway) . Aka Z-pack .
Glad it's getting you back on your feet even ...... more of if the cure doesn't kill you you'll be fine.

As soon as you're done with the antibiotic, go to a hippie food store or vitamin store and find some PB-8 pro-biotics and take one every few hours for a couple days, then once a day for a week or so. Restoring your gut bacteria to a healthy state ASAP will help your recovery from the antibiotics and the strep immensely.

I have never had any kind of reaction to meds like this stuff before, I am not a fan of the "if it doesn't kill you" meds, I could only imagine the 7th ring of hell they call chemo...

Good tip, I never thought of that for guys, I know women have issues with infections ya know... there... after strong antibiotics. Makes sense to give the system a boost.

If you have bad juju in your gut instead of the good flora (and the toxic stuff is first to form after an antibiotic holocaust), your whole immune system will be out of whack. The pizza-face Harter experiences is a symptom of massive immune system imbalance due to toxic gut flora.

Listen to Ian on this. Whenever any of us take an antibiotic, we always try to get a little yogurt in, in between doses. And, as the friendly bacteria doesn't stand much of a chance while on the med, we go to greater efforts after the course is finished.

Also, be sure to read the list of side effects carefully.

Once I get done with the antibiotics I will be sure to get some probiotic pills/capsules. Anything to speed along the recovery back to normal.

Sept. 10, 2021 Steve left us. You are missed.
Yes, yogurt is good stuff, but I think it needs to be the type with active cultures.

60 to 70% of your immune system is in your gut. If your gut flora are compromised, your immune system IS compromised.

Most supermarket yogurt is a sham. Might as well have ice cream as far as active cultures go. "Made with" active cultures as some say on the label does not mean there's anything left living by the time you put it in your mouth. Plus, even if you eat really active yogurt, you'll only be consuming a small portion of the spectrum of essential microbes. Capsules are the way to go. I have had excellent results from the mail-order Bio Trust product, but the company is worse than the mafia or NRA about bombarding you with propaganda, so bad I blocked them and quit buying. The PB-8 product is something I can get locally, is reasonably priced, and is one of the better probiotic supplements out there as far as I have researched.

Get your gut in order and you'll lose 1-3" in your waist, a few pounds, you'll be able to breath through your nose better, your acne will improve, and other immune system disorders like certain skin rashes and even rheumatoid arthritis can show some improvement. I sound like a freaking infomercial, don't I? NOT intending to, it's just that this info is scarce and the American diet is absolutely destructive of our #1 source of health, those little cooties in tummies. Chlorinated drinking water and Sucralose are a couple of things a lot of us consume throughout the day which in even small amounts wipe out the majority of the good bacteria. So we have heartburn, bloating, bathroom problems, diverticulitis, mood disorders (there's a big one, right there, since Seritonin is produced in the gut), and the list of complaints goes on.....all because we poison out little microbial friends to death just about every time we put something in our mouths. Frequent replenishings from good pro-biotics can sure help, I'm a testament to that.

Odd, the fluoroquinolones aren't generally known for GI upset. Just don't take it with food, milk, or anything with minerals like iron, calcium, or magnesium. They bind to the antibiotic and it won't be absorbed.
Your local drug store will have a wide selection of probiotics. You can even start them now to keep ahead of the curve a bit.

Interestingly I am answering this while at work, lunch technically, just another drug question for the day.

I have been taking them around 10AM, right between meals, glad you said not to take em with food because that was my next step. I may just be allergic to the medication? This has never happened before, normally if pills have side effects I just wave em off and don't look twice, not this one... it makes me take notice.

Not an allergy. No drug known to man doesn't cause upset stomach in some people.
Might let the MD know, pharmacy too, to flag your chart to say it caused some issues and that you prefer to avoid the drug class in the future.

I am a bit amazed they went with that drug. A Z-pak or even amoxicillin would have been my first guess.

Here is the bottle, the nausea may be from the dizziness, I feel drunk for a bit after this medication.

Dizziness will cause nausea in a hurry.

No good way to avoid the dizziness either. Best thing is to power thru this and get on with life.

Dog-gone sorry that Josh got sick and had to go on the fluoroquinolones, but grateful for the thread. This stuff is Brad's bread & butter and Ian has given me some "food for thought" too.

We have bottled water delivered to the house, Timber's water goes through 3 charcoal filters and even the water that comes out of the hose to water the garden goes through a charcoal filter. Mrs. smokeywolf makes all our bread products (with all organic ingredients), makes all our yogurt, supplements with back yard grown fruits and veggies. We still have a long way to go to improve our diet.

I can't stomach (pun intended) Azithromycin. I do tolerate Cipro and Levaquin fairly well, but not so sure about taking those now, as I have chronic tendonitis in both arms.

I'm going to look into the PB-8 probiotic.

I have just started taking Perfect Biotics from Probiotic America. Each capsule contains 15 strains and 30 billion CFUs. In about 5 days my sinus/allergy issues improved dramatically.
