the head doesn't look triangular enough to be a viper.

we got 2 types of snakes here.
rattle and water/garter if it ain't near water and isn't black it's a rattle snake.

Definitely a Rattle Headed Copper Moccosin. With it's head still intact. Makes me want to wet my pants. So it goes.

Young one too. Note the greenish hue to the tail. They use it to lure prey.

Great picture, Ben. Thanks for sharing.

A dear old friend of mine....he up and got married, dang it.We were serious trad bow hunting fools together for almost 10 years.

He was working as a St police dispatcher and as such, was getting "rides" on their helicopters when it came time to buy property, scoping out.He ends up with 100 acres which has a drive easement.... think an island of sorts,in a 14,000 acre parcel owned by a timber co.

Only problem is,it's the Eastern Diamondback rattler capital of the U.S.

Snakes don't bother me but DANG,goin to his place is asking for trouble?

He could get a few pigs and fix up the buzz tails in short order . Pigs love snakes like little kids an candy .

I used to love going to Belle Isle!

A bit further north, by Caseville, there is a peninsula called Sand Point, that juts out about 7 miles into the Saginaw Bay.

Story is, that it was all swampland, infested with snakes, and worthless.

Until some guy bought the whole thing for $3800, fenced off the base, and released pigs to kill the snakes.

He then charged hunters to kill the pigs, drained the land, and developed it.

VERY high end, expensive property!

Copperhead. Think, to be exact, Mountain Copperhead. More brown than copper/orange, and bigger. Ran into one in GA semi-mtns/hills years ago. Fortunately didn't step on him.

Hogs will kill/eat poisonous snakes. Snakes bite hogs, but fat 'insulates' them from poison. iirc, best/funniest story I read about this was on Paco Kelly's Levergun forum.

Spotted him "right off", well the body, not the head. That's the one we have to watch out for the most here.

They can vibrate the tip of their tail so fast in dry leaves, it can sound just like a rattle snake, just not as loud.
We have some huge rattlesnakes here also, but i see far and away more copperheads.
Usually pretty docile though as venomous snakes go, unless poked or stepped on.

I've stepped over several in my life before realizing they were there and never had one offer to strike. Stepping "on" one is a whole different ball of wax.
The cottonmouths here don't take prompting at all to strike....they start striking before your even that close to them.
