Road trip from Fairbanks Alaska to Arkansas

Not a good idea to drive anywhere in Arkansas between dusk & dawn, as far as wildlife is concerned. Daytime isn't that big of a deal.

The only deer to hit me poked his nose into the spokes of my left front wheel. Broad daylight. The next closest I've been to a cervid hood ornament was also daylight on the bypass.

shoulda loaned you my 79 scout... AKA the deer magnet.
i once had a deer hit it broadside while it was parked on the main street [state highway] down in Logan.
i was parked in front of the body shop looking for a new fender after hitting a deer earlier that morning.

Yeah looking forward to meeting you folks. We’re on vacation and retired. Not much of a schedule. So let us know if you want to get together.
Beautiful area here. Nice.

just to be clear, that is not why it got called Deer Magnet.

me and the BIL was heading up on the last day of the deer hunt/opening morning of the Elk hunt about 18-20 years back.
we come up to the bottom of the canyon and had to stop for some cows on the road.
i started laying on the horn kind of edging at them to get them to move, when a herd of about 40 deer come bounding pell mell down the hill side slamming into us like a hail storm.
a couple of them even skidded over the hood.
i got out and shot the buck [with my 41 mag.] that'd slammed into his door, fell down into the ditch there and was half jumping around kinda knocked all goofy, which of course finally got the cows moving... LOL

i don't know what was going on there, maybe a Mtn. Lion?

Well we made it to Mountain Home sometime in the afternoon. Dave was there in the next site and working on organizing his RV life. My brother Joe is setup across the way, but was over at the airport in Springfield Mo to pickup Bailey his daughter who flew in from N. C. to join us.
Well we got backed in, setup and unhooked. Since we hadn’t had time to clean the trailer and setup, we have lived z an out of sacks, one each since we picked up this little trailer in Kaysville.
Long drive, certainly not a young guy anymore. We had deadlines for the trip here because of the Eclipse was kinda predetermined. But, the return will be more leisurely, guarantied.
Well, Rick had asked me to give a call when we arrived and got setup.
So Rick says let’s go to dinner. Good idea, especially since we are not setup yet. So Rick, Karyn, Joe, Baylee, Dave and myself went to a restaurant with a greatly verified menu. Good place. It is as great final meet Rick since I’ve kinda known him for the past 8 years.

Congrats on making it here.

We rented a model C motor-home 7 years ago and traveled from SoCal to AR and MO. Mrs. smokeywolf plotted the trip and made all the campsite reservations. I stipulated to her that 300 miles per day was the ideal and anything over 350 should be avoided. Had I think 2 days of 400+ miles. It was a 3 week trip with a few of the stops lasting 2 or 3 nites.
We were following my middle son (Mr. Engineer) who was a percussionist traveling with an amateur marching band group. Every summer they (DCI) tour the U.S. and do approx 27 performances in 25 states in about 11 weeks. We saw him perform in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, the Alamo Dome in San Antonio and War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock. That trip was also the first time we got to meet Rick and John & Cindy. Was also when Mrs. smokeywolf fell in love with Mountain Home.

A large portion of the eclipseomaniacs diverted from T82 to places in AR due to predicted fog, cloud cover, and storms. We only worked four hours today and gave it up, tomorrow probably won't be any big deal either....here. I hope you and Karyn are planning to stay put for a few days, get your rig in order and wait out the crazy before getting back on the roads.

Years back dad bought a Shasta trailer about 1960 for weekend family camping. Looking at that "Red Rig" sure popped up alot of memories. Dad used a 63 Lincoln (suicide doors) to pull it.
I do like the addition of the awning !

We’re not going anywhere for a while. We have been wanting to look around MH for a while now. Plus my butt needs a break.

Well Monday Eclipse Day was here at last!
Weather prediction started out a couple days ago as about 65% overcast. As we got closer it was reduced to 45%, then 35%. Things were looking pretty good.
Monday morning prediction was 28%, things were certainly looking up! Karyn was just getting excited, she loves this stuff.

Well John and Cindy Winelover had been planning an Eclipse BBQ were they were smoking a batch of ribs, and as it turned out corn on the cob, baked potatoes, coleslaw, to go beside the ribs. Food was scheduled to happen after the Eclipse.
The gathering included John and Cindy of course, Rick, Smokeywolf and the Mrs Smokeywolf for the Arkansas contingent, and Karyn, Biscuit, myself, and Dave from Alaska, my brother Joe from California and Joe’s daughter Baylee from North Carolina. All gathered outside in the driveway which could easily be called a patio right outside their front door. The smoker was there, good smells emanating creating some anticipation of what was to come.

Well the weather guessers missed again, but in a good way. Might have been 5% cloudy, maybe.
About 12:35 the beginning of what to me was a very interesting and beautiful event. I thought it was an awesome event, Karyn was beside herself, which made the whole trip worth while. As we watched the moon slowly eat the sun until the moment of totality which lasted 4 minutes plus were you could watch with your naked eye. There was a sunspot outflow which you could see with your naked eye. Fabulous when you consider that that outflow was probably 3 times the size of the earth. The whole event makes you feel very insignificant in the scheme of things.

So afterwards the sun came back, the planet was still spinning, and the Politicians were still making things as miserable for us as possible.

The feed started. The dinning was in the kitchen and the dining room as well. Good food. Smoked ribs, what a treat.

Certainly want to thank John and Cindy for hosting this get together and the feed.

Always feel a little awkward when you haven’t met the folks that are so welcoming.

Rick was hauling us around and guiding us through what is loosely called a road system here. Don’t get me wrong, the roars are good, they are organized like a game of pickup sticks. Crazy roads. I’m not sure if I have even been in the town proper. Well we will be here probably for the rest of the week, so plenty of time to get lost and find our way back. Rain today and tomorrow so probably going to see about having dinner with Rick.

Just a couple of pictures with more to follow once I figure out how to get into the cloud.

Getting dark, temperature dropped about 10 to 15 degrees.

Nice to meet and chat with everyone.

Thankfully, the weather cooperated.

Biscuit is one well-behaved pup!

Hope everyone enjoyed the day. I know Cindy & I did.

Flagler beach , gals playing mini golf . let some kids see it with her glasses, they didn't know about it and we're really giggly. That was more fun than seeing the partial eclipse.
