Road trip from Fairbanks Alaska to Arkansas

Yesterday went exploring the area a bit more, George boat ramp and landing just before Salesville.

Next we there’s another pretty developed landing and Marina with covered docks, but for some reason I didn’t get pictures and can’t remember the name. I’ll edit that today.
Later Rick came over and joined Joe, Karyn, Biscuit and myself for a BBQ of pork chops, potatoes and salad. Biscuit has had a good couple of days with a leftovers from Colton’s and some treats from the BBQ. Afterwards we had a little fire as the blasted wind was not blasting for a while.

Rick and I talking some casting and BS, just enjoy the evening. Joe had retired at this point.
Joe brought a couple rifles that our Father had in his collection and gave them to me as I will be taking them back to Alaska when we go.
One is a little Remington model 12 - 22 LR, round barrel, and in very nice condition. And the other is a bit of a mystery. It’s a 22 single shot with a different action. Cute little thing, not a bit of stampings or identifiable markings that are visible. Will need to pull the stock and see if there are something underneath. I will start a thread here and post pictures in hopes of someone here on the forum can identify it. It’s probably pushing one hundred years old.

George's Cove area is about where we start trolling on Norfork Lake. It's about halfway between two of the eight or so marinas, on the lake. Tracy Ferry to the north and Quarry to the south. My fishing pontoon is docked at Tracy Ferry about 10-15 minutes from my place. All the marinas have covered docks.

Owner of Tracy Ferry Marina and his wife are great folks. Would run into them at a favorite breakfast place fairly often until I found out the owner of that favorite breakfast place is a convicted pedophile and I stopped going in there.

We've typically seen a total of about 10 days to 2 weeks of wind like that, each year; most of the time it stays below 12-15 MPH. According to the anemometer we had some 30 to 40 MPH gusts.
Thought about moving to Cheyenne, WY in 1978. 20 MPH wind was a calm day there.

When I was young and free a good friend and mentor suggested I move to Cheyenne or Casper and attend the dragster mechanic school there. I was actually considering it when it occurred to me to ask about the wind; he said it never stops blowing up there. I can't stand wind of any kind because it assaults my skin nerves creating instant overload. Then there's the arctic flash-freeze wind, a whole other kind of misery.

Stopped in Rawlins for gas, got out of the car and the wind blew my back against the car., asked the attendant if the wind always blows like that, he said "What wind"? Evanston and Cheyenne both looked rather nice, Laramie not so nice. What with the constant wind, Arctic cold and blizzards it's easy to understand why the Army troopers of the mid to late 1800s drank to excess and/or deserted.

Well John, I guess you're leaving us tomorrow. It has been a fun and interesting week having all of you visit. Take good care of my new best friend and drive carefully. Next time you get the urge to drive 5,000 miles you know where we are. :) If/when you get tired of midnight sun, snow and 40 below you could do a whole lot worse than becoming an Ozark hillbilly.

Yeah Rick it was very good to meet you, John, Cindy, along with Smokeywolf and the Mrs Smokeywolf.
Karyn, Biscuit and I appreciate the hospitality and good conversations.
It’s a good possibility that we will be back. Might come earlier in the year as it’s a bit hot now. 87* today, might force me to wear shorts. Heaven help us. Do you know that the City of Valdez wrote an ordinance forbidding me to wear shorts on the public docks. True story.

Well we made it to New Albany Mississippi by mid afternoon. Bucking a headwind most of the way. Gas mileage went into the toilet. Other than that it was a beautiful drive as we fought to stay in our lane, when the winds weren’t blowing head on they were quartering and moving just around quite a bit.
Beautiful State. But so far unimpressed. But first time here and only been in about 2% of the Mississippi so far so I’m trying to regain my open mind.
We got to Beth’s house which Beth had said we could park on the street or pull into the driveway. No on both accounts.
The little trailer is still 8’ wide which took up 3/4 of the traffic lane. Driveway started from level and transition to steep instantly.
So find an RV Park. There was one we found about 5 or 6 miles away, but as cell signal disappeared and the road became dirt and narrow, things were not looking good. Found the park and it looked like everyone was a permanent resident of the park. Not in a good way. Also thought I heard some distant banjo music. So find a Walmart. Walmart’s parking lot was sloped more than I cared to deal with. Finally found a RV park about 30 miles away. Actually it’s still under construction. Well we parked and at least we could plug in.
I know, I’m whining, but pretty disappointed so far, but today is a new day!!

Did learn a trick to clean bug guts off the windshield -- dryer sheets! Scrub down and rinse off. Even gets the 'no-see-em' junk. Don't know about using it on the paint - what chems in it.
