I'm sure there are still some princes using air and upright, but most of that lot stay low and keep dark these days. Most of them are just a passel of inbred clothes horses anyway.

OK, so now I'm worried that if go to all the trouble to recover this large amount of lead in the keel, that it might be contaminated with zinc or such. If I drill it to get some sample shavings out, how much does it cost to send it somewhere for analysis?

No need to panic about zinc in the alloy. If the boat is home made, and more than 15 years old, there would not likely be a lot of zinc available at that time. If you can file off a flat clean surface and apply a drop of muratic acid to the clean lead surface, it will bubble or fizz and indicate the presence of zinc. If it just turns dark, you will be good to go. This should answer the question of the presence of zinc.

The boat was made in 1969. Hull and deck are factory fiberglass, inside finished DIY. I could make someone a very good deal ...
