Recently, got a new flip phone due to having to have a capable 4G. Verizon store told me to go to Wally World and purchase the same one they sell for $119............it was $50 at Wally's. TCL is the brand.

Prior to, a $40 Nokia was purchased off Amazon. Didn't last two months before the display went south. Yep, the reviews on most all flip phones are negative. However, could be because nobody, but old farts, purchase them.

Grey and wet here this AM. Outside of the blizzard, it's been an easy winter so far. I'd prefer a bit more snow myself and less ice.

Kids are coming over for a feast of some sort today. Should be some good vittles at least.

Welp, I might have wasted my $$$ trying to get this phone fixed. I did get my contact numbers but the texts and pics are gone. Did a factory reset on the phone and it's not co-operating at all. I suppose a new phone is in the future. Problem is, every thing I look at that is in my price range (<$100) has reviews that range from poor to abysmal! I dunno, I use the darn thing as a phone/text, notebook, to grab pictures of stuff so I will remember how it came apart, stuff like that. Calculator, a couple of plant ID programs and some music. No streaming, almost no on line stuff, ral simple. You'd think there'd be reliable phones out there, but it doesn't sound that way. LG is out of the phone biz now and I'm not the only one sad to hear it.

I dunno, maybe I'll go back to a cheap flip phone and call it good.
These days I use a smart phone hundreds of times for every time I use a gun. I don't bother looking for new <$100 gun. Value for dollars expended.

Edited to include I'm still using an Iphone 7.

I hear ya. Being a Tracfone kinda guy, (cheap some might say, $16.00 a month), I went to both Tracfone and Wally World and looked around. If you read the reviews, there isn't much you can feel confident buying, and that goes for all types, not just flip phones! As noted in the past, I need a BIG screen and something tough. I like having it in a holster rather than a pocket. I see I can get an I Phone from Tracfone, but then I'm tied into the other Great Satan (#1 being Google with Androids). I just don't know. I'm sure none of these outfits expect people to keep a phone for more than 18 months or so, much less to roll around over it under a truck. Kyocera is supposed to make some real stout rigs, but I don't see them advertised much.

I don't know what to do. The LG I got was gifted to me after my $14.00 flip phone wore out. I never would have bought one, but now I'm hooked on talk to text, a screen I can read the words on and a camera that takes good pics of parts/part numbers in dim light under a machine. If anyone has something that's really impressed you with ruggedness and longevity, I'm all ears.

Well, to each their own. I'm not passing up a <$100.00 gun if I can find one. For that matter, wheres the value in $ expended if you blow $500 on a phone that craps out in 7 months? Happens all the time.

Problem with smart phones is they are not portable for men cause most don't carry a purse. My phone is strictly for emergencies. I don't give out the number and I rarely turn it on. Except, when leaving the homestead. Average of twice a month, maybe.

I don't text, send e-mail or take pictures..............that's what cameras are for.

I fact my cell service is free for the next ten years or so. I'm grandfathered in on a yearly plan, which Verizon recently discontinued. Was paying $100, once a year. Never used hardly any of those minutes. However, I had accumulated years of minutes. Verizon said they would take $5/month till all that accumulation is used up. And that's the reason I don't get free phones from Verizon.................they make you change your plan. No Thank You.

I don't carry a purse either but I am typically not far from my phone. It only works in the house down here in Thorn Hollow because it goes through WI-FI, out doors I have no signal.

I take pictures all the time with it, I text, I have an Application, (Bret ;)), that gives me the amount of line to release when trolling crank baits so I can achieve a precise depth for the lure to run. I have a Navionics App that I cannot only follow to a pretty precise GPS location, but I can place that GPS location on a pretty darned accurate map of a lake I want to go fish from the comfort of my Lazy Boy in January, and go try it in open water later in the year, or out on the ice now. I have the Strelok Pro App that my good shooting friend talked me into getting that I have not used yet but he loves it and claims he saved the price of the App very quickly in expensive .22 target ammo he did not waste getting long range zeros and working with windage. It is not just for .22's, Walter and his brother would benefit from this App I'm certain. I have atide chart for when I go down to the Gulf. I have a plant identification App and a bird song identification App I use to educate myself on things I see and hear out in the field. I have Spotify Premium and carry a bunch of play lists and can almost instantly search for and find any song, listen to it on a Ultimate Ears blue tooth speaker, or in my truck, or Sue's car. Like wise I have the Wisconsin Library App called Libby that allows me to search for and "borrow" books on my phone for 14 days at a time for free. I used that for several years to pacify prisoners during lengthy transports so they would shut the hell up instead of constantly jabbering about their plight while cuffed in the van. We'd arrive at court or the institution and they'd be surprised we were already there. Sue and I use it regularly to listen to books on the road and even while cooking, canning, or doing dishes.

Hell I can even drive the bow mounted trolling motor on my fishing boat with my I Phone if I need to with my I=Pilot Link. When an update is created by Humminbird for my sonar/mapping unit or for my Minnkota trolling motor I can down load the update to my I Phone and blue tooth it to the unit out on the water while fishing. We use the maps feature all the time. I'll make arrangements to meet someone for a Market Place purchase or any meeting for that matter, enter their address and get audible turn by turn directions plus a map on the phone. I can be listening to a book at the same time in the truck, the phone tells me of an upcoming turn interrupting the book and returns seamlessly to the book. I have never had the mapping driving directions lead me astray if I entered the address correctly. My phone will warn me of traffic crashes ahead typically in time for me to get off the highway before getting entangled in the cluster F and warns me of road construction and even speed traps.

Yup the damed thing tracks me. If I decide I have to "go dark" I'll deal with it then. I would hate to give up this old I Phone 7 it is simply too useful and has become almost a necessity. I do regret the loss of my Neo-Luddite status, but not very much.

Big Brother has capabilities beyond my smart phone. I don't know how to protect myself from Satellites or drones, or the NSA. When I think of the myriad of smart phones in use on the planet I'd have to become a pretty big player to arouse the interest of those people monitoring my location via my smart phone. Screw it. Wanna be really paranoid and over think things? Who do you suppose is the FBI informant here on this forum? Wink wink, nudge nudge say no more.

So my last halogen overhead shop light popped a bulb. Its brite enough, but hot and PIA changing these bulbs ya cannot even touch...
SO, I ordered some LED shop lights off Amazon... Cause they was CHEAP! 26$ for TWO two bulb lights. Yea, Yea I know :embarrassed:I had reservations but hopped amazon was a kinder gentler delivery service... UPS delivered them... FOLDED!! Grrr. Amazon return was PAINLESS!! They sent email I printed. Choose UPS pickup that HAPPENED NEXT DAY! THEY showed up with shipping lable!!

They make LED replacement 4 foot bulbs to replace your old fluorescent bulbs with no messing with fixtures. The replacement bulb I’ve used are very bright, even brighter then the new 4 foot LED fixtures. Don’t need to get all twisted into a knot for more light, it’s simple.

I’v got a iPhone SE which is a upgraded 6. Fits in my shirt pocket, don’t have to have a camera hanging around my neck, or in some camera bag, it’s just right there. If I want t cruise my favorite Forums while I’m traveling, the phone makes it easy. I fully understand not wanting to be bothered, I just turn it off.
lynn listed a lot of good points, I personally avoided smartphones until they were cheaper and flip phones were on there way out.
I’m In southern Oregon for a couple more weeks and wanted to sell my Honda 2000 on Craigslist. Posted the ad with my phone, took the pictures with my phone and received a call from the buyer all on my phone. Easy.
If someone wants to track me because I cashed my Social Security to fast, or I get up 3 times a night to use the bathroom, then I’m busted. Oh well.

Going over to Ashland Gun & Archery club for a Orientation which they have the first and third Saturday of the month for new members. Never been there going to check it out, more then likely I will join as it’s looks well run and organized. Certainly on the plus side it’s 7 minutes from we’re I am Living.
The other plus is my grandkids are 9, 10, and 12. Time to get them involved..

If you have a driver's license BB owns you. There are 20 search bots trolling the board right now. Your TV, microwave oven, and washing machine are listening to what you say. You can sweat it if you want, but I got more important things to be concerned about than trying to be incognito to avoid being taken away to the Ministry of Love for reprogramming.

Oh yeah I almost forgot the most important thing I’m doing today. My 10 year old grandson Cole and I are going to finish the rebuilding of his fort. B7C6531D-BE41-4E0C-B0BE-7929B3A69474.jpegWe have been interrupted by bad weather, lots of rain and high winds. This is the first nice day we’ve had in a while. When we get back from the gun range orientation we will get the little fort done.

I have seen the bulbs. I have one 48" fixture over another bench but if ballast goes its done. This one I replaced was a halogen. Those short 3-4" glass tubes with ceramic on ends. They get wicked hot and actually heat the room if Im down there long time. No more of that!! Instant on great clean light and no heat. Plus more efficient and less energy used.

I have what I call mushroom bulbs in pull chain recepticals over most of basement. They are LeD. Im gonna change one to outlet and install one of these 48" LEDs if harbor freight has them for good cost.

Where to begin.....

LED lights. CW, if you have a Harbor Freight near you, watch their flyers for sales. I had all flourescents in my shop and there were a constant source of aggravation. But I had purchased cases of replacement bulbs/tubes when I bought them so was putting up with them. HF had a sale I could not resist. We'd put their LEDs up on the firing line when we enclosed it and I was impressed. The sale was very cheap. I want to say $16 per 4 foot light, but might have been less. After I did the basement shop I was so impressed with the light that I went back and bought more for the garage. I hung 2 in the garage and it made a huge difference. But I have cold weather ballast flourescents in the garage and they were not cheap. So, I'll use those until they die or I run out of spare bulbs. I have more LED waiting to go up in the garage.

The LED turns my basement shop into an operating room. It's actually cheerful down there now. I found I looked forward to spending the day in the basement on projects.

Cell phones. First, I agree, each to his own. But I have to chuckle at the "big brother" concerns. Unless you are a criminal, wife beater or child molester, I'm not sure what the fear is all about. I remember when Google first showed up. A guy I know said "type your name into Google and hit "I feel luck". Your name and address will come up. THAT'S NOT RIGHT!!!". My replie was, "Open the phone book and look up your name. Your address and phone number will be there. What's the difference???

I was a hold out for smart phones, too. But flip phones went to Hell years ago. I liked flip phones because they were small and unobtrusive in my pocket. I had no need to be on the internet with a phone. I started using computers with the first IBM PC. We had one in the office that was shared. It's scared pretty much most of the folks in the office. But I was intrigues and when I found out there was a tool that would calculate mortgage payments I was in heaven because I was looking for my first house. But, since I could not buy a decent flip phone, I bought the cheapest LG smart phone I could from Verizon. We got a deal on our service because of company deals. I learned quickly how nice it was to have all that info in my pocket. Lost, you had Google Maps. Could not find what you wanted in a store, you sat in your car and found a store that did. Got a question about a gun, look it up on the web. Want to know what a certain gun is selling for, look it up on the web. Need a weather forecast, look it up on the web.

Now, the smart phone is just one of the lumps I check for in my pockets before I leave the house. Texts keep me in touch with friends without disturbing them and vise-versa. Having the phone in your pocket is like having radio communications in the military. No radio, you are on your own. Nice to be able to call in air support or tell the wife to pick up ice cream while she's at the store.

As for the camera option, my aging memory is no longer photographic. I take photos of assemblies I'm taking apart to assure I know the order for spacers, washers, spring placements, etc.. Not that I cannot figure it out eventually. But it's nice to have that as back-up. Need a copy of a document, take a pic with your phone. Friend needed a copy of an FFL the other day at Charlie's. He does not have a smartphone and can barely use a computer. I took a pic of his FFL and sent it as a text to a member in FL so the gun he just bought can be shipped to Charlie's shop. Gun shops accept digital copies of FFL for gun transfers. You can do it while you are standing in a shop in another state.

Yup, each to his own. But you are missing out on making your life easier. Waiting for a call from the doctor. Phone is in your pocket. Even if you don't ever use the smart features, if you have a stroke, heart attack or fall and hit your head, break your leg and you are alone, people can find you by tracking your phone. Like I said, I fought having a smart phone. I'm 70. I was wrong. It's a great asset/tool to have.

Have over a dozen 4' florescent fixtures throughout the house and garage. More than half have been converted (ballast removed) and correct LED tubes installed. Others, were changed out to the replacement bulbs that don't require the ballast to be removed. Yeah, they work if you don't mind the short delay, coming on and off. Those are in places where the get the most infrequent use.
