Forts and tree houses. All we had was an old wood outhouse - minus the 'pit' part. It did have a 'clear-story' where we could see invaders.

:headscratch: All we had were snow forts, whenever we got enough snow. Snowballs for artillery. Even attempted to build and igloo, using a square tub for a mould. Never did get the roof on. Guessing, that's why none of us became engineers.

The first shotgun I remember my Dad owning was a Mosberg bolt in 16 ga with a Poly-choke. It was like brand new. He used it for birds and rabbits and then stuffed slugs into it and hunted deer. I cannot imagine how that sucker kicked with with slugs. It is not a heavy gun. As time went by and Pop made more money, he sold that gun and got better ones, including a Savage 99 in .303 Savage for deer.

I too have had a hankering for a .30 Badger ever since Edd posted about it at the other place.

What will probably end up happening is I'll machine and bush a full length insert for one of my Winchester break-action shotguns and chamber it in 300 BLK. Or just keep loading mousefart .30-30 loads for either of my Savage 219s.

This is our road, as I headed down the hill to town to work on my remodel for the day. Took the three oldest kids on short snowmobile rides before leaving this morning as who knows how long it will stick around.

I can’t seem to make a photo right side up no matter which direction it is to start with!

Had an extra synapse fire yesterday and came up with dirt simple way to modify one of the Redding powder measures to have greater resolution when adjusting for a desired charge.

Made a steel bushing to insert into the 3/4" rifle measure port in the drum of the powder measure. Decided to make the new piston 3/8" diameter. This should double the resolution of the Redding micrometer scale. Here is the drum and the bushing ready to be assembled.

Bushing was made from 3/4 hot rolled steel barstock. Knocked some of the scale off in the lathe for a snug slip fit. The bushing will be held in place with Loctite RC609, which is a press-fit adhesive. I bought this stuff back in the 80's after the harmonic balancer flew off the crank on my '61 Vette. It will take up to 0.006 diametral clearance. So, it works with both press fits and slip fits. Adds 3000 psi of holding force. Sets in a few minutes and then takes 6 hours to fully cure.

But I'm not a patient boy. So, I loaded .30-06 rounds for Sunday's match and then put the drum in the lathe to machine the bushing flush.

Ended up stoning the last few tenths off. I think the body of the measure is worn a little as it only dragged in one spot. Good to go.

Just finished a sandwich for a late lunch. Will now do back down and machine the piston to fit the 3/8" bore in the modified drum. Nice think about the Loctite, is it is not permanent. I can return the drum back to normal. Only the piston mod will be permanent. But if I had to, I could repair the piston.

I have a strange affinity for bolt action shotguns. I suppose it's just the "I gotta be different" thing, but from a utilitarian/price standpoint they have their appeal. Fugly, but useful, and not real high on the "Steal Me!" list.
My Dad had a J.C. Higgins Model 583.21 in 16 gauge.
It's sitting in the safe right now.
Bet it hasn't been fired in at least 30 years, probably more.

Continued the task of cleaning the guns in the safe that haven't been fully cleaned since last summer.
The only one that I will not clean is my 1916 Spanish Mauser! When it was given to me the barrel was worn and like a sewer pipe. After much scrubbing I got the rust out of it and only shoot it with pc'ed cast! Probably 2000 rounds thru it now with no cleaning and the bore is quite smooth and all the pits have filled in! Now it has become a 7.8 mm target gun! Pretty accurate too!
Neck sized a bunch of .243 brass then decided to throw it in the vibrating cleaner for a few hours! Brass was getting too discolored for my liking.

I bought some fresh shrimp today so Karen made her Shrimp in garlic sauce with Linguine!
Damn Great! Still can not out do her with her "scratch recipes"! ;)

Finished the powder measure. The decision to go with 3/8" for the piston was the right one. Here is the old piston turned down to 3/8"

The scale on the micrometer adjuster goes to 100 and I get my standard load of 17 gr of 2400 at 70. So, I have room to spare. Then I dialed it down to 60 and meastured the charge. It was 14.6 gr. So for a change of 10 on the micrometer, it altered the charge 2.4 grains. That means every number on the thimble represents 0.24 grains and for the 10 incremental lines between each number, each is 0.024 grains. So, between 0 and 1 on the scale below represents .24 grains. This should work out nicely for zeroing in on a charge weight.

When I was done, I made a new powder baffle for the powder column to further improve the repeatability of the measure.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Ended up in town anyway and got the snow plow part for half what the cheap place on the internet wanted. That doesn't happen often!

You'd think a person selling a machine for 7 grand would take photos that weren't totally fuzzy.

Jon, if you get it, would like to see pics and know more about it. f@ceb00k won't let you see the ad unless you log in.

I don't do f@ceb00k, tweety, instantgr@m, tick-t@c or any other social media. Guess you could say I'm antisocial-media.
