Miserable cold, rainy, and heavy wind day so didn't do much. My back has flared up again so sat on my rocker with heat pad and my Grey Cat "Pooter" on my lap, much of the day watching TV with Karen.
They had a good sale on ground Angus Beef this past week & Karen was feeling better on her feet so she made us Old Fashion Meatloaf, mashed potatoes and Air fried green beans for supper!
Man that was very tasty!
Evening will find me back in the chair watching the tube!
Really thinking of going to the Chiropractor this week! This pain has been off & on since December. Also lost a filling in my tooth this week so I'm feeling pain at both ends!

I used to go on 3 day, thru two week long survival camping trips. Different parts of the country, different times of the year. Once in the Mountains of Kentucky for an entire month.
Often taking nothing but a small medicine bag with a fire starter and a knife, and a cooking pot. Plus the clothes on my back.

Over the years.
Family, change of careers, and my health have slowly taken my ability to do that away. Now I am down to doing half days excursions.
I like that Mitty, have done a couple of those over long weekends. We usually cheated a little with some corn meal, or parched corn, or split peas. Hunt, fish, forage or get pretty hungry. No killing of protected species allowed, were our rules. Seasons and techniques may have been bent a little.

Reloading lessons today. The guys took me out for lunch afterwards. Then on the way home I saw 70° so I texted Sue and asked if she wanted to go for a motorcycle ride when I got home. First ride of 2024 we put on 75 miles. It was windy up on the ridges but felt good to get the bike back out.

When I was a kid my Dad used to drop me off at a little pond to fish all day until he picked me up on his way home from work. Not camping out but it was a good 9-10 or more hours by myself. Behind the pond was a creek. Did not pack a lunch....I always made sure I had a pork and bean can that was washed and cleaned ....At lunch time I would fill it half full with crayfish from that creek and the rest water and start a small fire to cook my meal!
Wow that was a great simple time in my life

Emmett now you see why i do the raised beds with the hoops and covers.
if i don't want water in the box i pull the plastic down, if i need some water i roll it back.
it's also a heat holder to extend my season by almost another month.

sides my maters are all like 2"s tall, i still got 2 months till they go outside.... AKA in the green house.

man.
you guys ever try assembling a trampoline with just over half the parts and no instructions?
after 2 trips to the hardware store.... jump on it,,, don't,,, whatever.
got that done.
the above ground pool is in place and just needs the filter put on and filled.
don't know why so early [shrug] but it ain't mine,, i just assemble the thing.
got the chicken hut and yard cleaned out and new straw tossed in for them to arrange.
on one trip to the hardware store i snagged a yard cart thing that i can tow behind one of the wheelers.
it ain't highway safe or nuthin but it'll easily haul 300+lbs. and has a dump feature.

best part is it'll fit through either of my side gates [not a feature for most of them]..... been looking for one for a while now and this one was about half what i been seeing them for, plus i had cash in hand.

Yard and garden stuff the last few days.
>Thursday, I prepped the garden soil, maybe I plant some seeds of cold weather loving veggies today.
>I did some major weed removal and fresh wood-chip installation around two sides of the house...that's a lot more work than it sounds.
>A friend dug up 3 current berry plants, he gave me one, and I planted it in the yard yesterday afternoon, while it was quite windy, sunny, and 88º.

The rain came back with a vengeance last night and today.
The forecast for the next week or so calls for good weather.
So much for outside work.
So, I made my nephew a batch of snack sticks today.
They are in the Big Chief drying.

Just got back from meeting the Asure Standard truck to pick up bulk packages of beans (navy, kidney, pinto), bread flour, salt (Redmond Real Salt) and a case of quart size bottles of apple cider vinegar. This will likely be the last time we buy salt in our lifetime and most of our youngest son's lifetime.

Going to try and get the Mrs. out today to shoot the new Walther PD380 that she now carries.

Today, I baled the back yard. Or, I should have. Been gone for two weeks and the frequent rains and moderate temperature, plus the eclipse(!), showed me 10-12 in grass when we got home. Got out the walk behind as it cuts higher than our lawn tractor. 1/2 laps or it would clog. Looks good and the compost pile will benefit from the clippings.

Hung hog panels in the garden so I can plant the climbing roses Herself likes. Temporarily planted 5 Swamp Oak trees. They will get moved into the yard in front of the house after we reconfigure it a bit.

Also located and marked about a dozen trillium and the same number of trout lilies to move in the fall.

Long day. Good dinner, now sitting on the porch listening to the stream and sipping a glass of Sambuca.

Sla’inte!

Gun show wkend. very slow show, but did very well with some of the estate stuff helping a lady sell. Bought some misc stuff for me: 2 lbs Blue Dot ($20!; unopened), Ohaus 454 RB mold, primers etc. Also a pre-Lyman/Hawken 50 cal ML. May or may not keep the 58 of exactly the same - not sure. Youngest son came/hung out for awhile today. Got to educate him (wants to learn) on some details on milsurps, etc. All in all, a great weekend!

Jon and Sue and I went handlining. The force of the cluster was evident. Jon hooked a nice keeper walleye right away. It was diving under the boat and the hand line cable got caught on something, I think a transducer. I tried to net it and the hooks got caught on the outside of the net. I lifted the fish into the boat but the cable was still caught pulling the net up short. I tried to jiggle it free and threw the fish overboard.
Later a small tree went fork first around the kicker motor lower unit, not too big of an issue.
Then at the end of the second trolling run both of Sure's leaders got wrapped in the kicker motor prop. I was hors de combat at that point. I realized what happened and shut down the kicker. I was able to save the two Rapalas, but the two leaders were hopelessly wrapped around the prop shaft and would have cut the lower unit seal if allowed to continue to run. We were done.
Man it was getting warm, hot, as we made our way home. Sue and I looked at each other and said, "Motorcycle ride?"
Got home parked the boat, got the Indian out and put on 93 miles. No clustering observed on the bike ride. Saw 87° on the digital thermometer for the highest temp. Never saw lower that 80° the whole ride. Sue and I decided that 84° is the warmest we would prefer all Summer frankly. 46° now as I type this.
I'll be gone fishin' the next two or three days with my buddy Jimmy. You all fare well in the mean time.

He had just gotten to do a little side-by-side testing. And I wanted to get it back to him so I made arrangements to go and drop it off. We had a really bad storm roll through. They called for showers starting at 1400 yesterday, but it mounted to a big rainstorm that didn't make it through until after 1800! Big thunder and lots of lightning. He lives adjacent to a big dairy farm on top of the fairly high hill here with excellent views. I arrived about 15 minutes after an arranged time and he was delayed with his errands. So I walked around in a surreal environment. Kind of like that green sky tornado, looking time. a couple of really good pictures but try as I might. I couldn't get a lightning strike.
