Regional weather:
I guess we all have somethings that are great about where we live and some things that are less than great.
Minnesota has a solid 4 seasons, and I love the change of seasons and I love all the seasons, as long as they don't stick around too long. The snow and cold isn't a problem for me, until it reaches the 5th month of winter...then (if a 5th month of winter happens), I am choppin on the bit for Spring.

I do have a fascination with the desert...which, none are found in MN, in the traditional sense. I visited/camped at Big Bend (in TX) and I loved the Rocky desert of that place. I've also spent some time in Southern New Mexico...following some old wagon trail, riding in a old Jeep and wandering up some rock pile mountain to investigate a cave/mine in the side.

California's Central Coast Amid The Insanity
After too many years of never getting round to it, I now have an outdoor GFI outlet, and in time for Christmas. Our son-in-law works part-time for an electrical contractor friend, so I didn't have to do anything other than pull on a wire one time, and have a cup of coffee and watch.

The chance of rain that was originally scheduled to be 48%, but was subsequently downgraded to 26%, happened, though it was more of a heavy drizzle than a light rain. No matter, it is welcome, and more is scheduled for next week's Wednesday. Weatherunderground scheduled it as early as last Thursday, but NOAA didn't post anything till late this morning.

Did go fishing today. When we just got there, the wind started to blowing. Was not fun. Hard to control the boat and stay put with the anchor motor Jigged for awhile, nothing. So we went to a small cove that pretty much got us out of the wind, The boat would stay anchored there and according to the expensive handy dandy super duper fish finder, there were a lot of fish. Got tired of jigging and not catching anything, so went to using power bait. We started to catch fish. Keep 6 for family dinner and let the rest go.

everything I have been getting lately has been too big or too little.

Looking for a public shooting range near Jasper, Ar. Sylamore is too far away.

Sylamore is about half hour down the road from me. Never been there, just drove past. Have my own backyard range. Cindy, frequently, goes hiking in the Jasper area............about an hour and a half away.

had to take the oldest Daughter down to do some pre-op tests today.
2 different doctors, two different tests in the same hospital,, 4 hours apart.

she couldn't eat, drink, or take her medicine until about 3PM and was about as grouchy as all get out.
the wife said she couldn't eat so nobody else could either, then was the one complaining about wanting to go and get something.
I did get to whip out the debit card at the cable place down there so we could get new satellite dishes hooked up because the one and only cable provider here in town is calling it quits.
it was just 20$ less than the new water heater I was gonna buy so there is that.

on the bright side I got to drive through a snow storm all the way home in the Tahoe which has the worst radio reception on the planet and no satellite either, which might have drowned out part of the 3 way 200 decibel 'conversation' taking place 2' away the entire trip.
I need an aspirin.

Kinda a bla day. Spent most of the day reading past posts in this and a couple forums trying to educate myself on casting. Discovered Elvis ammo on u tube, and fortune cookie 500. Not even near ready for PC which seems to be there current forte. But I found some helpful ideas in their casting and lead scrounging videos of yore.
Baked a bone in hickory smoked ham, sliced it up and made some sour dough rye bread, and got some horseradish mustard for sandwiches, since wife was feeling down with arthritis today.
Drug myself into work at 5 but been a very boring night as both furnaces are down, so far...

Just like everybody else, I get telemarketers calling me, 2, 3, or 4 times a day.
Do you ever answer and talk to them?
Mostly I don't, but once in a while I will listen until I know what they are selling or asking for, then hang up.
I've never bought anything from any of them, or donated any money to the caller's organization.
Do you suppose anyone does? Some people must, because they keep calling, right?

Ever since I bought the used truck (2000 Chevy C2500) about 2 years ago, I've been thinking I should have the windshield replaced...It came with 3 major cracks, one goes all the way across the windshield, right in my viewing area. It's against the law in MN to drive on public roads with a cracked windshield, I rarely leave town with this truck. If I were to be pulled over, I'd probably just get a fix-it ticket anyway, so I haven't been in a hurry to replace it.

Back to telemarketers.
This morning, I get a cold call from Alpine Glass (I never heard of them).
I listen, then instead of hanging up, I ask for a quote for a windshield (I don't have glass coverage on my insurance).
My C2500 is the old body style, so it's common with lots of trucks throughout the 1990s. I was told the windshield should be cheap (like $200) because of the commonality. The friend that told me this hasn't had a windshield installed for over a decade...probably 2 decades, so I take that price with a grain of salt. ...AND the last windshield I've had replaced in 2012 (my '98 Buick Park Ave) was around $450, installed.
The Lady gives me a quote of $245 installed in my driveway...must be cash though. No checks accepted and $35 CC fee.
I said, let's make an appointment...She said how about tomorrow morning.
I said, OK.

So that is a BIG first for me, buying something from a cold call...I never imaged doing such a thing.
Wish me luck.

it's not like they don't have the windshield right there.
if it's a pay now and i'll go get it deal... then well ya know how that goes.

back in my younger days I was home on leave about this time of year and the wife says I found a job that lasts two maybe three weeks.
I was like umm okay lets go see.
it was cold calling people and selling them tickets to the shriner's circus.
they gave us a whole script to follow with some ideas on how to get people to talk long enough to get the pitch across.
I gave up on that after like two days of trying and just come out and said hey I'm calling about selling tickets to the Shriners circus, they are xx dollars each,, you interested?
bingo, I started selling tickets to about 25-30% of the people I called.

Jonb,
We've had Alpine do two windshields for us. Did good job on both and did one in the parkinglot of Wal-Mart while the wife was working. Way cheaper than the body shops up here.

SUBCONTRACTORS. Probably just a small time guy just starting, using their name, supply chain and referrals to get out on his own. A lot like Sears, and Montgomery Wards used to do, years ago. I dealt with An Alpine glass affiliate here in Ohio, recently on a house trailer window repair. A little shady but work was done right, cash was paid, no receipt, but I am happy.
Just make sure you get the name of the actual small company or the individual, before they start. Make sure you check out the finished product before giving any cash. Do not pay them and let them drive off with the job not finished. Walk softly. You should be ok.
Good luck!

I made that fish dinner I posted about yesterday. Fresh caught fish, hash browns* and a green salad.
It was as good as I thought it would be. Don't know if we will get out again, long range weather forecast calls for temps in the 20 to 25° temps starting next week. Water temp was 42° yesterday. So it won't be long before the water rolls over and it starts to ice over. Then I guess we will take so time off until the ice gets thick enough to support us. Then we start ice fishing.

* I make my own hash browns. Not fried potatoes, boiled potatoes, but hash browns. Use russet potatoes, peel them myself and shred them. Cook them on a heave iron griddle. Nothing but butter, salt and pepper.

Working through my small lots of fired cartridges--44 Mag, 38 Special, and now 38 S&W. These last 2 are using the same bullet, the NOE version of Lyman #358477. These fall out at a fat .360", in 38/357 they get sized at .358"; in 38 S&W I size in a .361" H&I die and they pretty much clean right up. No lube leaks, anyway. This lot of '477' got cast of 30/1 Pb/Sn, and I have sized at both .359" and at .361" to fit my Colt PP x 4" and S&W RegPol x 4". Just for grins I tried both diameters in both guns, and couldn't see that accuracy was affected by the differing diameters. Maybe the soft alloy slugs up; maybe little pipsqueak powder charges and docile pressures (2.2 grains of WW-231) make the loads behave themselves without fuss & bother. I didn't try these loads in the wider-throated S&W M&P x 5" (.363' throats). I have fatter castings for that example and the Webley-Enfield (Lyman #358063 @ .364" and NEI #169A at the same size), but those will wait for later times. Perhaps a more succinct question might be 'Just WTH am I doing with FIVE revolvers in 38 S&W?' I guess they needed a good home.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Al, only 5? I'm pretty sure they have a good home already!

Got to the skin doc yesterday and mentioned I thought I'd missed an appt a couple years back. Guy looks and says, "Yeah, that appt was 6 1/2 years ago."!!! Where does the time go? He only had to hit 4 or 5 places and my ears. The one area that's the "big" problem he hit hard twice. That one kinda hurts, the rest are just annoying. He also finally told me what the bumps the last 2 PA's got all nervous about were- oil glands. Who knew? Not a bad experience at all. Makes me feel a little better about wearing my goofy straw hats or a fedora all spring, summer and fall. Seems like it's working, more or less.

Got home and dedicated the afternoon to clearing the garage out enough so I could have 2 actual bays. I'd stopped and picked up that head while coming home from the dr's. Boyo, machine work isn't cheap! But it's done and done right. He did all four exhaust seats. Someone else had been in there before I guess and kinda did a ham handed job. Anyway, I have to get that tractor done and the skid steer is still popping and backfiring. It's never fun to work on stuff, but it's a lot less fun to do it in knee deep snow with a stiff breeze in your face. Got much of the job done, but still have to do some more today. I really, really need to slap together a small shed for lubes, fuel and maybe chains and jacks. Wouldn't hurt if I could put the 3 trash cans in there too. I thought 4x8 would work originally, but 6x12 is probably a better bet. I buy 5 gal cans of lube on sale 3-4 at a time. They add up quick.

Windshields in vehicles are an interesting topic to an old traffic cop with two accident recon guys working out of our office. Windshields are an important part of the structural integrity of the cab in a roll over crash. Defects in the windshield cause the glass to fail prematurely and allow the cab to crush down on the occupants.
If you windshield installer is professional, he/she will be wearing nitrile gloves. Dirt and oils on the hands can adversely effect the bonding of the adhesives on the windshield and windshield frame. If the glass pops out in a crash you lose a lot of protection.
Auto glass and seat belt/shoulder harnesses are an important part of protecting occupants when things go wrong, and not just in rollovers. The safest place to be in a crash is to remain inside the vehicle. It's a cold cruel world out there for the ejected.

We get Spam calls stating that our Social Security or Facebook Account or Windows on our computer has been compromised.
We don't even have Facebook Accounts.
Usually, the voice speaks in very broken English and sometimes doesn't even make sense.
