Lauren Bacall, aka "The Face". She was a real looker. I also liked her in "The Shootist", opposite John Wayne.
Agree on "The African Queen".
Had a heck of a crush on Natalie Wood.

Recently watched a video tour of Wayne's yacht, "Wild Goose", which is still pretty much intact and kept in the harbor at Newport Beach.
Just catching up on this thread when I saw this about John Wayne’s Wild Goose.
In the early 2000’s Karyn and I were looking for a decent sized live abound yacht for extended charters. Needed at least 3 staterooms plus crew quarters. The other item was if rated at over 100 tons the vessel wasn’t restricted to a maximum of six passengers.
I don’t remember the tonnage of the Norwester was but it was 70 plus feet. We looked a it as it was for sale and had been particularly restored by a private party who had given up or run out of money. Probably both, which was fairly common, easy to get in over your head with a woody. A wooden vessel is a lift style. We looked at half a dozen wooden vessels from 60 plus up to one absolutely beautiful 110 foot vessel with 11 staterooms and crew quarters. Awesome vessel. Powered by a pair Detroit Cleveland’s.
Wayne’s old Norwester needed too much work structurally to fit our budget. We found a 1927 75 foot vessel in La Connor Washington that was near completion, partially replanked with 10,000 new fasteners in the haul alone. New knee’s and lintel’s. Beautiful vessel. Just needed some cosmetic work. Powered by a couple of low deck 671’s. Five staterooms and crew quarters. We flew down to look at it more than once, trying to remember the name. It was used by the Government as a rum runner for a short period during Prohibition.
All of the vessels we were looking at were from Lake Union and north to Anacortes.

Wayne's old Norwester recently sank off the San Juan Islands striking submerged rocks during some heavy seas.

The Wild Goose is a 136 foot converted WW II mine sweeper. Wild Goose had several sister ships, one of which was Calypso; Jaques Cousteau's ship.

Damn I hate to hear that about the Norwester. Beautiful vessel.
I love the old woody’s. Up keep is a life style.
I’ve seen the Wild Goose in Newport Harbor from a distance as I didn’t have the proper deck shoes for the docks.

At one time, long ago, wife and I thought about retiring to a new wooden tug boat made in Olympia, WA. A 36 footer for just cruising Puget sound and the Columbia River. When grandbabies showed up, that was that! Got to have place for nursery and see them every week. :(

added: The boat I looked at in 1981 was $36,000. Now one similar is $249,000. Nice dream while it lasted!

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
My collection of "Wooden Boat" magazines runs from the mid 80's into the early 2000's. Grew up in a Lyman hearing stories about ancestors who were among the first commercial boat builders in the Ogdensburg NY area. That type of stuff runs in the blood. The realities of the upkeep though... that'll break your heart and bank account!

Sympatico with Chet and Suzy is one of my favorite cd's.
You might look for one of Chet's albums with Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits fame. It's called Neck and Neck. And not a western but a movie worth looking up is called Thank You for Smoking. It's actually pretty funny, can't describe it here without running afoul of the no politics rule but I would bet the MOD SQUAD reference at least get a chuckle from some of you.

It's even better finding videos of Mark and Chet playing together. 2 masters having fun. Or find anything by Richard Smith, a guy who in an instant made my excuse of sucking on guitar because I have chunky, fairly short fingered hands fly right out the window. Tommy Emanual, Billy Strings, all sorts of truly awesome players out there.

Chet Atkins and Tommy Emmanual put out an album together titled The Day the Finger Pickers Took Over the World. I still have about 10 or so CD's of Chet Atkins here.

In 1981, I looked at a HOUSE in Olympia for $9,000!

I've got a mess of Chets stuff on pirated CDs. "Trambone" is still my all time favorite. He always got the feel and phrasing right- ALWAYS!

It looks like a punt gun to me, possibly for hunting on the Chesapeake Bay in the 1870s or so. Mounted on a boat, aimed by turning the boat towards the flock. Quite old-fashioned by 1923. Something Grandpa would have used.

In 1990 you could buy a corner lot 3/2 w/2car in Salt Lake City for $36,000 . Nice lawns quite a ways off the highways , brand new houses then , full appliance sets in the kitchen and laundry room.

You can still buy houses for about that up here, not brand new, but you can do it.
