Various Low Node Rifle Targets I have shot

John, All my rifle alloy is low BHN about 11-12
I collect range scrap and smelt each ....But I separate it into Jacketed (Low BHN under 10) and Commercial cast bullet alloy ( a lot of pistol shooters by cast bullets on line so that comes in at about 18 bhn! )
So then I Mix One part commercial cast range scrap with 2 parts Jacketed range scrap! This is for rifle bullets! If I need pistol bullets I use 3 to 4 Jacketed ingots to one of Commercial cast bullets,. On my range only Ed and I shoot true cast bullets at 11-12 bhn The rest of the cast is from commercial dealers and they sell "hard cast" because they have to ship them successfully not because they work better!
I too am not a BHN guy but I use it as a guide to get where I need. for low node shooting
Alloy mixes mean nothing to me because i use what I have to make my own. When I run low on things I fudge things to get what I need

close-nuff good-nuff....

Johnny i think you've seen enough recommendations to not get wrapped around the axle about exactness, or 1 BHN point being the end of the world.
most of us make a huge batch of alloy out of what we got handy and then work our loads to make the most of things.

i shoot a lot of 2400 at about 1900 fps with most of my rifles, and unique in the big handgun cases at around 3/4's throttle.
sometimes i wander off the path to faster powders in stuff like the 9mm and 45 acp, or when i want the 44/38 special to plop bullets out at 700 fps.
it's all the same alloy, exactly what it is???
hell i can guess at what's in it,a lot of 22 bullets, car and truck ww's, some Lino, Lino spacers, a few meh [shrug] ingots, some Body lead, a little Tin, and some stick on ww's are all mixed together.
probably some copper and zinc in there too.

i've wound it up to 2400 or better a few times, and i've pushed it all the way to the top in the 357/44 mag/45 colt without a gas check.

the only thing it is, is consistent.

Man I love this low node stuff. I only shoot against myself. The Winchester wst really got me hooked. Using the Lyman 86 gr Loverin bullet at 50 yards.. the first ones I tried were about 4 inches low,but I didn't care. It's so much fun. I may have to set up my Chrono just to see how fast they are going. I really appreciate all your post. Adds more fun than trying to shoot way out there.. I love it..

I Call it Subsonic or right above! The most accurate shooting at that "node" So I started calling it "Low Node"
It is a big challenge ( For Me) and is easy on my body and I prefer 50 yards. It requires a good discipline in the reloading room (For Accuracy as well as saftey)!

You are correct. I use my rcbs electric scale and trickler. I can't believe how interesting it is. I figure I don't have to go to 100 yards any more..50 can be pretty tough for old shaking hands. And I think I can sit my Chrono closer than with high pressure loads. This is also a plus for me.

Ben, Other than working on target loads, everything in the field I shoot would be about 50 yards.

Yes Ben, Was the one that hooked me on it! He had me amazed what he was doing and I decided to experiment with it! Now it is all I shoot!
I just started to use the term "Low Node" shooting from threads I read about Medium and High Node shooting ! Felt Low Node shooting was left out!

eh.
i use 50 yds. to sight in my deer rifles with jacketed loads.
then put 2 to 100 meters and a pair at 300 meters.
i can fine tune exactly where i want the holes to be easier and the rest is for rise and drop.
and yeah our range is screwy.

Are you powder coating your plain base bullets ?

John,
I'm not sure who you addressed this to but I know Ben is a traditional lube man! He should be because he is the inventor of "Ben's Red" and "Ben's Liquid Lube" Some of the best stuff around!
I Powder coat all my Low Node Bullets!
