After a couple days of fighting over the phone with idiot medical clerks on all ends of this anemia mess, Marie and I left for a day trip to the desert this morning. I can't do much, but I can sit and ride in a Jeep, so that's what we did--out to Joshua Tree National Park(ing Lot). Oh, yes--the turistas have arrived in numbers now that the temps have moderated a bit. It was really lovely today, 80*-82* mid-day through JTNP on our drive-through. We stopped here and there, and a litany of many languages were audible in the parking areas.
3 hours at JTNP, exiting the south/Cottonwood Road route. This transitions into Box Canyon Road, the old U.S. 60 between Chiriaco Summit and Mecca. Plenty of daylight left, so we went south along SR 111/Salton Sea's east shore to Bombay Beach, which remains a preposterous art colony/Road Warrior post-apocalyptic leftover from the Salton Sea's great days as a recreation site. Must be seen to be believed, that is all.
From there we went on to the Wister Unit Cal-DFW waterfowl hunting/birding preserve, and MY GOODNESS have the teal arrived! Cinnamon and greenwings in good numbers loafing on the ponds, about 250 lifted off when Marie got out of the Jeep for a photo attempt. This was 75 yards or more from the road, so those birds are schooled and ready for business. It was great seeing all of those birds! Cloudy and gloomy as we left, looked like rain in Baja California and around Palo Verde and Yuma.
Dusk was upon us, so we headed homeward and landed about 2 hours ago. A great day, but I am worn out.
