Where Is All The Brass At???

Hi,
My cousin came into a Ruger Blackhawk 45 LC, and though I was raised up with rifles and shotguns...

Had not really shot a big bore pistol before... (over 40 years ago!)

Well when I shot that 45 LC, wow, that thing bit me in the azz and a week later...

He had sold the pistol when I went back to shoot it, so...

I took him down to, the Old Prager's Guns, in Orlando, and bought each of us a Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 Mag.

The old man behind the counter told us as we left, "You Boys be careful, those pistols kill on one end, and maim, on the other!"

Well. he was right, and I got into reloading and casting to load DOWN those 44 mags for easier shooting!

Hi,
I've been trying to get my hands on some 44 Mag. Brass and...
I'm willing to bet that Starline will have it available again within a month, maybe two.
Question is, can you wait that long and take a chance?

Never mind, I see you found some.

Hi,
Thanks, yes I was taken pity on and have 50 cases on the way which will work great for me.

I heard there was a new Primer Factory coming on line.

No more info but good news for the future, if not right now.

Found it!

Back 2-3 years ago when ammo was rather inexpensive and 9mm FMJ could found for $10, or less a box, and 223 FMJ stuff in 7-8 ish range, fired brass at the county range was often free for the asking from those who shot it, even the larger caliber stuff. Frequently while I was picking up someones "trash" they would make comments in somewhat derogatory tones of something to the effect of "I don't why you bother with 9mm, 223, etc., it's not worth my while to reload, I can by it cheaper than what it costs me to load, my time is worth more than that, blah, blah, blah. I just smiled to myself and kept bending and picking. Fast forward to present day, I am still smiling, and I am sure they are missing and poaning about how much ammo costs, when, they can find it. Willing to bet they ran out of TP as well.

yep Littlegirl pointed out some 20 dollar a box 9mm stuff yesterday.
i was like well, maybe when i get done shooting my 3 and a half dollar a box reloads i might care.
or more maybe likely i'll go ahead and burn up another 180 lbs of alloy and just load another 10-K at the same price using the same components.

I think as far as components are concerned, we are screwed!
Probably why I went back to building flintlocks
Ya gots a good point there Jim. Locally it seems everyone shoots inlines and uses the pellets. I haven't seen a can of real black in some time, but then I haven't really looked hard either. There's something to be said for a primer that consists of a sparky rock!!!

Especially if you can poke around in the woods and find some chert nodules and bust up your own crude flints. Did that one time at an encampment to prove I could do it and shot several squirrels using home made "flints". They are not durable like good English gun flints but by God they do work! There's a .36 poor boy and a 24 gauge early English trade gun here somewheres with rock locks.

Then there was the time I walked into Track of the Wolf up in Minnesota and the guy there was sorting out the inventory of a Wisconsin Gun Shop he had bought out. He was sorting flints from a big jumble in a box. I asked, "How much for the flints?" He said, "Oh 35 cents a piece for these and....." I said, "No no, all of them." He threw me a price below my wildest dreams. Then he asked, "Got any caplocks?" I said, "Sure." He showed me sleeves of RWS caps. Sleeves of paper wrapped around cans of caps. Lots and lots of caps. Told me he could not ship them that way, and did I want a deal on caps? Tee hee hee hee. I think I need one good percussion revolver again, just in case. I think there are two Hawken clones with 3 barrels and a Tennessee poor boy propped up in the corners, 46, 50, 53, 54 "calibers" with matching moulds. As I said before, it's gonna be one hell of an estate sale some day.

Every time I break out the Track of the Wolf catalog I get the pages all drool covered...

Last week, Starline had 44 Mag brass in stock. Probably, gone by now. Need to keep checking suppliers. Hit or miss, nowadays.

I learned something tonight.
I was gonna start a new thread, but maybe fits in this one ok.

Right now, 41 mag brass is challenging to find at a reasonable price. A member at the other forum wanted my stash of new Starline 41 mag brass more than I wanted to keep it. I figured it'll be available again, hopefully at a reasonable price, so about a month ago, I sold him all I the new stuff I had.

When I looked at Starline's webpage for 41 Mag, it said,
"Status: Backordered
Ship date:
To Be Determined"

I noticed some other calibers of brass said,
"Status: Out of Stock /
No Backorders at this time"

So, I considered placing an order for 1K 41 Mag brass. I hesitated for about a week, waiting for the STATUS to change. Then I started thinking, I better just order it now, so I did, that was 10 days ago (8/9/22.) I get a email notification right away saying, "Backordered items will ship as soon as they become available. Due to increased demand at this time, items will ship in a first-come, first served order dependent upon availability"

Every few days, I check the website.
Today, the 41 mag page says,
"Status: Out of Stock /
No Backorders at this time"

Then I check my order status on their webpage.
It says "Processing"...Yippee, I should be getting my brass soon.
=======================================
So, what did I learn?
I learned that Starline will use the Status,
"Status: Out of Stock /
No Backorders at this time"

if they don't think they can ship in 30 days.
AND
they'll use the Status,
"Status: Backordered
Ship date:
To Be Determined"
if they think they can ship in 30 days.
========================================
Why do I think that,
Because when you place an order, you will get a paragraph (of often overlooked info) that includes this,
"If we are able to fulfil your order within 30 days we will charge the card and ship your order. If your order does not ship within 30 days, we will reach out to you with a phone call or email to get your credit card information. You will have 7 business days from the time we reach out to you to pay for the order before it will be canceled."

I surmise, they don't want to spend time dealing with people in the over 30 days category, unless an unexpected delay occurs.

Thanks for posting all of that, Jon. I was under the impression from many people posting on forums that if it says "backordered", just go ahead and order it because it will free up soon enough.

I had the opportunity to trade brass for SP primers last week. First new primers I have seen for a very long time. They were back ordered for about a year I was told. The product is slowly becoming available.

"OK, OK, I'm going as fast as I don't want to go!"
Seagiant1 - I sent you an IM. I have a bag of 65 that I have picked up off the ground.

I'll send them your way if you want them.

remember when I posted this? ...Turns out I was wrong...

My Order Status still says "processing"
I was gonna post this a month ago, but I figure I'd wait another month.

Honestly, now I have no idea how they do things.
