Warm day, but cloudy and off and on rain. Found a break in this weather and was able to open up my cellar doors and set up my casting pot.
Cast about 250 Lyman 38 wad cutters for my buddy Ed!
Looks like I may get the chance to do the same tomorrow afternoon, also

messing with Fusion 360 and the 3D printer more. Learning more features and how to create what I want.
Should have the final print by tomorrow evening. The printer isn’t fast but it is easy- get it going and walk away.

Friend of mine who's going through pretty much the same thing I am, although far more advanced, came through a 6.5 hr operation with flying colors! I don't know how much time all this buys us, but it does give you some hope!

Maple sugaring is fully underway here. Huge billows of steam coming from every sugar house and lots of back yards.

Heard a Killdeere the other morning. That little guy is WAY early to be here!

The mechanic called and said none of his suppliers have an "approved" converter, but he is not giving up the search.

Waiting for the AAA convertor theft person to call and make an appointment for picture taking of the missing cat, VIN, etc.

A cousin of my wife, and his wife, store their motorhome at the same facility. My wife called the wife, to give them a heads up, and she said their convertor was stolen during the December break-in. The cousin checked and their replaced convertor is still in place.

If I understand this entire process correctly: The American, Russian, and Mexican mafias steal the converters, ship them to China where they are dismantled, the rare Earth elements are then used to re-manufacture new converters which are then sold to the American car manufactures and parts suppliers. If I wait long enough it's certainly possible I can buy my converter back. All that, and the perpetual whiners and hand-wringers still complain that the air isn't too clean enough for their liking.

We had a converter thief hit the little Ford Ranger the Town runs odd jobs with. Before the Troopers could arrest him, (I arrested his father numerous times- genetic thievery!), he was crushed to death under another car he was attempting to steal a converter from.

Play stupid games...

Diet:
I've been slipping in this department. It's the age old story of the ups and downs of Dieting. Since about Christmas time, I've been playing fast and loose with the simple carbs...and gained about 20 lbs. So, Wednesday, I decided to get back on track. I cleaned out the cupboards of all the simple carb food that I love, some went to my buddy's Ducks, the rest went in the trash. Wish me luck.

Pretty sure that in California, you have no choice but to replace the converter. Here in Arkansas, we have no testing of vehicles, whatsoever. We can just have a test pipe installed. Unless Michigan changed, they don't test emissions, either.

When I bought my 2001 GMC. It Had been used as a plow truck on a hotel. It was in great shape but had rusted out brake lines and plugged converter.

Dealer I bought thru couldnt get origional equiptment. I paid for new exhaust and we bought "hi flow" converters from Jegs. A preformance car parts supplyer. More universal and weld in u its but FAR less expensive far smaller and met all
Legal requirements ALSO offered preformance improvement's from better flow. I font remember costs as it was about 2008 but they are still in and fine @ 215K miles.

When my exhauset manifold's cracked I stole
Same idea and bought stainless steel ahorty headers. Bolted in factory position. Where better quality 1/2 cost and offered preformance gains. Mileage and power.

Maybe this can work for you?

When I was a boy, my grandfathers Motor home needed manifolds for his 440 Chrysler. He bought tube headers and full custom exhaust for much less then factory exhaust dealer wanted to sell him. Plus was REALLY woke up power on hills plus gained a few gallons per mile in mileage!!

WARNING : Whiney post to follow!!

I ordered a new cartridge for my ancient HP Laserjet 5 printer. They are dirt cheap on ebay because offices update printers or they die and they are stuck with replacement cartridges. So the new cartridge arrived today in the original, sealed HP box and the black plastic envelope inside was also sealed. It was legit. I've had enough of these to recognize the refilled ones.

I pulled the tab to remove the shipping seal/tape and when I went to put it into my printer it barfed toner big time. I thought it might have been some that had collected in the filling process. I held it over my trash can (good thing) and agitated the toner by turning it side to side. Holy crap!! It puked toner in huge quantities into the trash can. And because this stuff is like black baby powder, it also went into about a 3 foot surrounding area. I stopped, carefully put it back in the bag like it was a ticking bomb and then took the next half hour vacuuming the printer, the carpet, my desk, my shoes and me. What a mess.

Whining part is officially over.

I decided to call HP and bitch. Got a really nice kid in Costa Rica. Took my info, opened a case and then wanted pictures and my purchase receipt. I figured when he saw ebay, it was going to be over. He took my phone and email and said he would work on it. 10 minutes later he calls back and says the warranty was approved and a new cartridge will be shipped to me by HP.

Other than the mess, it turned out okay. Guess I'll get to keep this 30+ year old printer going for a bit longer. I did go down into the basement while I was waiting to hear back from him and dug out a newer 6P I had and dusted it off. Plugged it in and it works like a champ. But it needs a new cartridge and they are even cheaper on ebay than the ones for the 4.

Life is good.

:headscratch:Sometimes it's cheaper to purchase a new printer than buy ink cartridges for the one you have. :headbang:
Funny you should mention that. There is a local guy that refills inkjet cartridges. I was there last Saturday and he let me come in the back to watch the process. He's a retired accountant/banker and does it for something to do. He's been doing it for 18 years. Said it pays the rent, insurance and power bills for the store. He does not make any money. Said he started doing it to keep the cartridges out of the landfills. Said there is no need to buy new. He puts a sticker on every cartridge he refills. He showed me a picture of a customer's cartridge that had been refilled so many times that there was no more room for stickers.

The ink is water based. So, if the head is plugged, you just set it in a saucer of boiling water. Then he uses a small vacuum to suck out any remaining ink. Inside the cartridge is a sponge. The HP cartridges I was having filled for my old buddy Steve held 5ml of ink. Not much. He said it was about 15 cents his cost. For HP, who makes the ink, he figured about a penny or less.

You can buy refill kits. Now that I know how it is done and what the tricks are, if I ever get an inkjet printer (threw out my last one cuz the cartridges were always dried out when I went to print) I'll refill my own. Takes all of 10 minutes if you have to soak the head.

He also told me that HP designed the cartridge 30 years ago and they have not changed since. So, there is zero cost to them other than the materials. They are making a killing on these. He figures it costs them less than a dollar to make one, including the packaging.

Wine and CW,
That California leads the world in wackiness and upside-downiness and all its countless unintended consequences, which I'm just shy of being totally convinced are purposely intended, it's a given that the converter has to be an exotic and super-duper model made of extra-special and extremely-rare rare Earth metals.

The interesting part is, the metals are becoming so rare that my mechanic said Sacramento is hoping (no prayers, there) for an asteroid to come to Earth in Outer Mongolia, thereby giving the Chinese a new source of material.
(Insert winkie for those who don't think I'm being facetious.)
(For those who think I'm being facetious, maybe the reality is more real than my facetiousness.)

Carry on.

They do that in Muslim countries. About the only thing of theirs, I can agree with.

But for different reasons. They don't use toilet paper, they use the fingers of the left hand. They also mostly don't use silverware, with the left hand gone they have to both eat and wipe with the right hand.

Menards got fruit trees in. My friend and I went at looked at them this evening.
There is still about 10" of snow in the yard, and deeper in the spot I want to plant a Harrelson apple tree.
