The county I live in is the size of Connecticut and has a population of 225,000 that mostly live along one river valley; the rest steppe or forest.

I lived in a county just smaller than Maryland with a 1.6 pop density . 6,000 <>. Everywhere was a range .

We are 6 -7 hours from Cherry County, larger than Connecticut with just over 5000 people. To get there we drive thru a few counties with under 1000 people.

Central and western Nebraska is sparsely populated. By people and trees alike.

Brad, I drive from Ft Robinson SP to Sioux Falls, to shoot in the Nationals every other year. West NB is on of my favorite places (except the winters are so cold!).

Ft Robinson is my favorite State Park in the entire US! Spend a couple of days there every other year.

There aren't that many cheap camping places for seniors in SE Idaho. Mostly commercial or not made for 5th Wheels. I drive Hy 30 to NB.

You are about right Rick.
In whatever map software you like search for Halsey, Nebraska. Nearby is the Nebraska National Forest. Paul and I, along with a few other guys, hunted turkeys and deer for years. Lots of ground, much of it wide open. Shot a few sage grouse there too.

by cheap you mean free?
camping is everywhere, if you want electricity or hook-up's then no not so much, and you have to find one of those type places, or fire up the generator and follow a blue sign to a grey/black water dump when you come back down.

it's really more a matter of turning off the highway in the right places and just turning off the dirt road into a wide spot or go up under the tree's rather than finding an actual camp ground.
just about every lake here has camping spots, you just don't have to pay for them so they ain't listed on a website.
other than that pretty much everything more than 100' higher than the highway is caribou Ntl. forest.

there's always the option of parking in front of my place and running a cord out to the wheel too, it can't get any cheaper than that.

Well, not free, but $60 a night at Lava Hot Springs KOA is pretty stiff. Things might be safer there; here between the gangs and dopers, it isn't safe any where within 250 miles of salt water to camp "in the open". A tank of gas east of I-5 is prime hunting territory the bad guys.

yeah,,,, don't stop in tourist town, it's full of drunks, transient hippies, and butt holes.
I only go over there for dinner from time to time [or maybe an ice cream cone] and that's only because I get a 10% discount.

it's a lot different over here, even though it's only 15 miles away.

Washington was overrun in the 1980's.

I Was Born and Raised there, spent my first 38 Years of life on the Wa Coast, It was an AWESOME place to Grow up, But was also an AWESOME place to move away From when i did, i moved from there 10 Years ago, My only Regret is that I didn’t move Sooner.

Transplant Californians do weird things when they "escape" from the PRK. They claim to be fleeing high taxation and crime, and are seeking a different kind of life. So far, all good. But transplants want to have California-level services and business models, and get very pushy when the friendly but far less intense customer catering is not forthcoming. Transplant Californians often bring sizable cash resources upon arrival, derived from sale of homes & property is this over-priced carjacker's theme park, and can out-bid and out-pay long-term residents who do not have those resources to bargain with. What has developed in one adjacent state (at least) is a two-tiered housing price structure, both on buying and renting. Locals prices vs. transplants prices. I am not sure how legal that might be, but they practice it openly and without much pretense. I have a strong aversion to buccaneers of any form, and spent 3 weeks on one such potential purchase before unwinding the offer in disgust. People throwing cash around like a sailor in port annoys me too, but adjacent states fail to recognize that good, quiet, decent people live here too.
