Building a 1911 is a second year gunsmith apprentice project using the master's thousands of dollars worth of special tools. The sum cost of the parts FAR exceeds what a mid-range 1911 costs on a 4473. Heck, the books alone that you need to PROPERLY fit and time a mail-order basketcase cost as much as an entry-level 1911, maybe more depending on if you get all four or just the pair from the other guy, volume one and two.

Yeah, a Turnbull Model 70 is several grand more than a factory model, same with the re-fitted Colt 1911. You get what you pay for in certain places.

I have a bucket list rifle, it's looking like it's going to be a Hagn falling block. Bare actions in the white are 2500 bucks, but I have close to 10 grand in machine tools and the bucket list will be a journey leading up to actually making a similar rifle to Hagn's.

Buy whatever for the frame .
Fit all of the parts from the build kit.......

Shot a Springfield Armory once it had a little trigger work and some slide polish .

Any one has any luck with a Taurus.
I have only ever owned 1 Taurus that did not need tweaking from the box, and was 100% satisfied with. That was my full size .357. revolver. The semi auto's have always left me a bit short.
But then again we're - are modified imitations of way better crafted Beretta's I have owned.

Thanks for correcting me, it was the Fire Star not Star Fire like I wrote.

That little PD was my nigh stand gun for a few years, I'm pretty much in the .38 snub camp for CCW now.

Dad had a lot of 1911s, the ones I got from him are AMTs including a long slide one in 10mm, I think they called it the Javelina.

I have a Ruger SR1911 I won in a raffle I have yet to shoot. Need to get it out. I'm really more of a revolver guy.

Tjose was the guns that had big problems with gualing in stainless Bret ( I think) mentioned earlier in the thread. I had a AMT Hardballer that was gualing.
I always wanted a Javelina today Im looking hard @ a Gursan long slide 10mm.

One of my local friends with a large gun collection, has a Taurus 1911 in 38 super. While I haven't fired it, he says it's a great shooter...I think he had ideas of using it in league events, but I don't think that has happened yet.

Thanks.
I just looked at two RIAs. One was the budget it did not impress me. The other was the full size elite. The elite was really nice. Slide cut for Novac . But the True glown imitation instead. Which I could live with. Adjustable trigger. Real close to the optimized colt I had fired earlier. Only downside was the mag release and the finish. Everything else was sweet. $650 + tax.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
My bud texted me back Emmitt. He bought a Taurus 1911 and has been happy with it. His would be 13-15-ish years old, if that matters.

I don't know what the "Elite " model is.
An "adjustable" trigger on a 1911 is typically a set screw in the trigger to limit over-travel. It can be a nice feature but it is an option that's easy enough to add later with an after market trigger.
If the magazine release is a standard 1911 style mag release - that's all you really want. Oversized magazine releases are for race guns. And even then, I question their usefulness.

Of all the features a 1911 has, I don't recall ever having heard a complaint about a magazine release before. What's wrong with it?

Stiff and not very pronounced.
Not enough strength in my thumb to push it down far enough to release the magazine. In one handed operation.

Always had good luck with EAA. And the local dealer here, that sells them.
Had a Witness.
I wish I would never have parted with it. They have an on sight smith, and always honored the warranties on everything they sell, walk in.
Which I have never had to use, but know a couple fellows that did.
So we took a trip to the Closest EAA dealer.
You would not believe the options they had. And most all, for what I had in my pocket. Way better coating then the RIA.
Not quite as nice a trigger as the RIA as in no adjustment. But after about eighth of an inch movement, a crisp 4 lb pull.
Slide smooth as butter. Way better then a Tasis. But not Quite a Danial Defence.
The grips safety was a little stiff. And the big disappointment was they all had these cheap "Airsoftish"plastic grips. Like they just ran out of quality and care when it came to slapping on some grips.
Had the exact sights I was looking for except not adjustable.
I really think as long as the sights are on for me. The only thing I will be changing is the grips. The boy can help me pick those out.
The slide is Novac Cut so sight change no big deal. If I decide to change those.IMG_20221206_191222431~2.jpg

500 OTD hard to go wrong there.
now you just need to see if it likes 230's or 200's better.
i got one that shoots 225/230's right on top of the front sight, and the 200's go right behind the front dot as far out as i can hit anything with it.

oh good thing the acp likes red-dot.... LOL

Ye, I don't think I was hurt any.
Ya did notice $30 of that was for a box of factory 230 ammo?
It's what the dealer says that gun likes. We will see. Ye and shame on me for buying pre rolled ammo at 60 cents a round.:(

gotta start somewhere, plus if something is wrong you got a receipt.
i like to run a box of somebody else screwed up in a new gun personally.
it cost me 65 bucks for some 348 win a few years back, but... i had a leg to stand on when i returned the rifle and pointed out some problems with it.

Not yet, but still have some trading off to do with the .223 dies. And some other stuff. To trade around with. Pluss it is Winter. So no hurry.
Think I will be puting at least 200 factory rounds of various breeds thru it. To figure out what it likes, and test it for defects or issues.
So there is the brass, pluss what I find in the ground now that I am looking.
Want to wait and see what it likes, before I look at moulds.

You can replace it with an oversized one for only $35.99 plus tax and shipping.
