I did a swap with a guy about six weeks ago. 1k srp for his 1k 209 primers. I know that he was gonna flip them on the regional website. He was proud of it. He told me he had been doing this for a decade, buying up whole estates and just sitting on it till “the sky starts falling again” were his exact words.

Ethically it didn’t bother me. Six months before those primers had cost the same. But when we did this swap srp were valued at twice what the 209’s were worth. But, I got what I wanted.

What about if you buy a mold. Cast up fifty or a hundred pounds with it and then put it on EBay? Thereby letting the “Market” decide it’s current value. Is that a despicable behavior?

Josh
I don’t. It’s not like it’s a necessity item.
Might be better off selling the cast bullets though, unless of course you’re short on lead.

Good luck on the metric post holes. I'll keep an eye out round here.

RB got my "Circle M" branded Whitworth tool, it could be the only one left in the country. He made out good.

Just being the Devil’s advocate here. I wonder about necessity vs pleasure/recreation.

Many of our great grandfather’s fished and hunted for food, they used in their lifetime’s less bullets, hooks and line, then some of us use in a season or two, to say nothing about fuel.

What is the motive of the guy who pays $200.00 for a Lee mold. Is he feeding his family? Is he protecting his family? Or is he getting into a hobby at the wrong time? Is it my responsibility to counsel him against such a foolhardy purchase?

Personally, I’ve been helping out a few local friends out with ammo, primers, and powder. But I also recently auctioned a mold on EBay for an absurd amount of money. In my mind one thing helps pay for the other.

I haven't listed anything on fleabay for several years, BUT I am about to. The Lee turret presses are going for double or more. I have two old 3 hole turret presses that have been sitting around for a while. I have one friend I am mentoring reloading, he uses a single stage. I sent him a email asking if he is interested on one of them for a price that'd be expected 12 months ago. Both are very decent, one has upgraded ram and priming system, and the other one doesn't and also doesn't have the auto-index either. I haven't heard from him yet. I may list some Lee Molds as well.

I think the current trend of ridiculously overpriced casting and reloading equipment and components is fueled solely by the perpetually unprepared and misguided. At some future time, when their uncertainly and fear have waned, they will revert to their old ways and their reloading equipment and components will be stored away and forgotten. They don't look at casting and reloading as the means to independence or a hobby, but only as the latest electronic socializing fad of the moment.

These "shortages/outages" track pretty closely with election timing, esp. with Presidential years. The weird and predatory behaviors on display during such times are almost predictable.

Oh, I have Unique too. All depends on how remorseful he wants to be!
Andddd.... I probably should have bought that too. This would be a perfect time for me to sell off my onesie-twosie powders that I'll probably never end up using, and standardize/simplify my reloading stock. But truthfully, I have plenty of powder, especially now.:)

I'm not necessarily a "flipper", per se. I did sell some of my older supplies to buy newer, fresher stock. But I've never bought something just to sell at a profit. Now I'm not selling anything. I do agree with Joshua about letting market demand set the final price though. Except for food, medical supplies, and the like.

I dunno.
it should be expected.
remember going to gun shows and trading off something for something else, then rummaging through the big box of pistol grips or holsters, flipping over a bunch of molds to see the numbers, or digging through partial boxes of bullets marked 60 or 62 on the side in magic marker for 5 bucks a box.

then shortly on it was jacked up gun prices, jerky, jam, AR parts, open carry, ''vintage'' boxes of over priced springs and take off Remington barrels, tables full of Chinese knives and 'fantasy' swords?????

I have close to 100K of primers on my shelves currently, in an assortment of makes and sizes. My first instinct at times like these is NOT to go make a killing by selling off some part of those, but to feel warm & comfy knowing that the shooting needs of myself and extended family are "shortage-proof". Gotta make yourself happy in this life, and this is how I go about doing so. Other folks have other priorities, and that is their business.

Yeah I have all I'll need, I was just getting rid of the excess that I will not use in my life time. And even considering now that I'm retired, that I will have time to burn a lot more powder. When this shortage is over I will be picking up some new to me powders to play with but what I have of the older stand by stuff will do just fine.

I'll admit to buying 5 moulds and selling 3 for more than I stole.....er .....paid for the 5 and kept the ones I wanted . I've scalped a little brass too , about a yr before I was wishing I had it ......

I've never soaked anybody , I've asked more than I wanted/needed with an offer option ......must not have asked enough .

Anybody want to buy some Herco ? :) :)

I fell pray to the eBay shenanigans couple weeks ago. I did get a nice 2 cavity ideal 358-429 though cost me 83.00 before shipping and tax. After that it was 98 dollars. Realistically it was a 50$ mold i figure. I did get an ideal 429-244 with handles for 63 dollars it’s in really good condition. I felt I came out ok on that one. I’ve been watching eBay and it is rediculous at what stuff is going for. Lee 2 cavity’s are 80-120 bucks. I bought 2 before they went out of stock 6 weeks ago and they were 27 bucks a piece. First ones I bought were 20-22IIRC. Anyway.

I sold 1000Fed 215Ms to a guy couple months back for the same 60 bucks I paid for them. He’d have paid 100 or more but I wouldn’t feel right doing a friend that way. Rick those 5k are going to make this kid right here happy as a puppy with two peters. I got a lot of Large rifle work to do this year and they will keep me in the boom for quite a while. Now if I can just find some small pistol magnums I’ll be good to go.

And Yal can keep the post hole diggers!!!! They don’t fit my hands anymore.

Yeah but, no body can say despicable like Mel Blanc! You type despicable and I hear Daffy Duck spraying it across a black and white TV screen.
