NOE 301-175 Paper Patch

you want the core to lightly engrave the rifling anyway, that's what shreds the paper.

EXACTLY! This .308 Bore is REALLY Tight, like .299-299.5, A .303 Core is simply to Big. I tried anyway, But Results were DISASTROUS at Best. My .300 Win Mag on the other hand might do ok with this Bullet from the Mold, it has a larger .301 Bore

from 303 on down is a bit much to push down with a wrapper on.
but I'd probably want to do a final lubed patch sizing to iron everything down and to final size the patch and core.
you should be able to go from 301 to +/-300 on that last pass.

There is Definitely a Fine line on the Core being to Large, I even tried with Softer 1-30 Alloy in hopes that the Patch would Hang on, Which was nothing more than Wishful thinking. I knew i was up against a Problem with the Core being to Large and Not having my Sizer yet, But i stil had to IMPATIENTLY try! :)

Looking back, it was actually Comical, I wish i had done a Video of it, I can’t remember Exactly How many times i shot? I wanna say 7-8 Shots Total on 2 Separate Outings? Anyway, I hit the Target 1 Time ONLY, and that was when i walked up 20 Yards from it, That Bullet went through Sideways o_O When they Exited the Bore they went AWOL! I found where a Few had hit the Ground, I even seen a Tree Limb Wiggle upper Right Way Behind the Target, Knocked the Snow out of it.

I feel like the Core being .001 over Bore Diameter is PLENTY enough, I know .003-.004 is TO MUCH, at least in my .308 Win. It will be interesting to See how my .300 Magnum does? I plan to try this Lyman 311299 200 Grain Bullet Sized down, and Patched up in the .300 Win Mag as well.

don't feel bad.
my first go at it... LOL.
first shot,, dead on center of the target, it looked like I measured the hole from 4 angles made an X and center punched it before drilling the hole.
nice neat perfectly round little wad cutter looking hole.

then the next 4 either shot the first .000 group in history or?
I doubt that old bubba'd Arisaka shot .000 especially with the 9 or 12lb. trigger it switched back and forth between depending on how it felt at that moment in time.
I just kept adjusting the core diameter until it decided to shoot all the bullets on the paper.

That's why I wrote the article, to save time. I outlined the "rules" for core size vs bore diameter and how to determine final patched diameter. I also explained what alloy strength is required for certain velocities using the guideline of published jacketed bullet data for slow-for-cartridge powder of same weight jacketed bullet. You went outside both core parameters and alloy strength and now you know for certain what does and does not work. Lubing the patches is very important too. Literally anything works, even Burt's Bees lip balm applied to the patch surface from the tube after they are dry, liquid Alox, or bearing grease.

NOE moulds never hit their published size in my experience and that is highly frustrating. For patch cores you probably need a few sizers anyway because the tolerance is so critical that you may have to use different sizes to the half-thousandth for each rifle of the same caliber.

Now you have something that will duplicate your copper jax loads but that you can make yourself and not even have to buy gas checks. How cool is that? Congratulations on your success!

I learned a lot from your Tutorial Ian, VERY Informative! I tried NO LUBE the 1st outing, and used Chapstick on my 2nd outing (I was simply BEAT due to the Core being to Large) Today was my Skunk Lube Just Because :) When you get these Paper Patch Bullets Right, they can be VERY Rewarding, Same applies to Muzzleloader

I really enjoy Paper Patching, I have a Tutorial Video on it for Muzzleloader (Patching to Bore Diameter)

I don't know if it was touched on , probably in the articles , but it takes sometimes a lot of rounds to get the barrel to shoot paper patched depending on what it was to begin with and how much relatively invisible stuff is in there to polish . I've had one just heave to right off and one that took 150 to wake up . There was that one that never did really come around until I gave up on it and stuffed the last bullets in because they were prepped to go for that rifle .
