Remingtons 360 Buckhammer

The 44 is quite overshadowed in all this straight wall talk. It really should be more to the fore front as its been doing its thing with great effectiveness for nearly 70 years. Similar can be said for the 41 Magnum with some 11 years less and the 45 Colt as grand dad.

My perspective will be tainted with the sales/engineering debacle, wherein ambitious folks go out and sell ideas, which the people who have to commit said ideas into a real, functioning thing is a huge and tiresome model of inefficiency. But then, engineers may not necessarily the best at "selling" a concept either, nor are buyers necessarily willing to abadnon something which just works (and is "paid for") without some delusion that it's supremely "better." As with so many things, there is so little refinement or finesses - everything has to be over-the-top, greatest, wowest, fantasticalest,....

I harbor a deep-seated distrust of people selling things, which started when I was a little kid, watching commercials on my grandma's TV. Even then, it appeared to me that you really didn't get enough information to support the underlying, but enthusiastic claims.

Since I no longer want "one of everything," and neat, odd or esoteric things do not excite me just because they are neat, odd or esoteric, my choices aren't based on how fast the cartridge is, let alone how much "energy it delivers at the muzzle," rather much of my attraction goes toward logistical matters, such that I don't get caught with something I can't get components for. Last evening, I saw 100 new 300 Winchester Magnum cases advertised for $200!! That is NOT a weird or esoteric cartridge. The 30/30 plods on.

I will need to know much more about this new wonder before committing to it, like that is really can be made from 30/30 brass. This is one of the appealing things about the 300 BLK to me. This one of the reasons I haven't invested in the 350L.

Yup, many questions floating about. I didn't sleep much last night this thread on my mind.
Came ta mind that the 375 Winchester sends a 200g bullet just past 2200 fps, in a lever. We know its brass is beefed up in the web.
We also should remember Winchester Big Bores for the 307/356/375 to handle the higher pressures generated.
The 307/356 was JUST under there cousins the 308/358 and shared case dims sans that rim. So should have seen even greater back thrust generated. Yet the Marlins didnt get that same treatment. But we never did see production of the 307 only 356 & 375. Henry shares much with the Marlin designs doubtful unless MUCH public acceptance will this be chambered in any Winchester lever. Esp since the '94 is no more in reg production.

I really hope CVA jumps on this one. Will do allot for spreading acceptance.

How long till Shot again? :p ;)

Only reason I made any comments. I suspect it's like the 350L, factory brass unless you go to a lot of effort. I have no real interest in either but was curious. I looked into it when I was wanting a RB or FB rifle, that urge has passed.

Im hoping the existing dims of the 30/30 brass being fatter then its caliber @ the base causing taper ta make 358 is enough and we done see Winchester nonsense completely changing parent cases. Id bet its 375 style brass. Was 7/30 also thicker? I dont remember 100%. I guess I could section one to see but not gonna sacrifice either or the new caliber as both are not as common.

I have used reg 30/30 for both my 7/30's and 375 Winchesters but I also don't, generally, push limits of a given Cartridge.

i wonder if the 360BH is actually fired from a 20" barrel? i think that the 30-30 with a 170gr bullet claims 2200fps in a 24" barrel. we'll have to wait and see what the cartridge is? i don't think its a 30-30, more like a 375 Win or like a cut down 30-40 krag or 303 British. i wonder what the 35 krag pr 35/303 British does?

they say it's based on the 30-30 case.

i just wish they'd quit dancing around the 357 Max, and go ahead and make one.

bonus.
they show 35 Remington ammo as being available in next years catalogue.
they also show 6mm Rem, and 257 Rob. brass too.
i won't be holding my breath.

A 357 Max in a lever-action is a very simple finagle. I'm surprised there aren't a lot more of them.

Remington could have simply opened up the floodgates on .444 ammo, and added a lower recoil version, then the world only needed to dust off the 444 barrel tooling. But no, somebody wanted a new cartridge.

As much as I love it, the Maxi has less power then the Legend. No manufacturer is gonna produce a lower preforming anything into a new market.

The 444 Marlin's case is too long. Its simply not a candidate.

Its not just "another cartridge" its a cartridge built within a specific set of parameters. THAT field is largely un furrowed. We have only seen the 350 & 450 as new entries. The 50 Beau qualifies in some locations. But built as a AR thumper not a straight wall hunting caliber. The 357 Mag, 41 Mag, 357 Max, 43 Mag and 45 Colts are existing applicable calibers. (Sure a few others lil more obscure like the 500 Smith, 454 & 445 SM maybe the 460 Smith fits too not sure of case length there.

OK--I am the resident heretic hereabouts. I take this 'calling' seriously.

I have been slacking and back-sliding of late. Blame this on the holiday season, reflexive laziness and sloth, bad attitude, or any other appropriate epithet.

We are well into our fifth page of this 360 Buckhammer thread, and unless I miised it.......NO ONE has mentioned anything about an annoying fact--THE FIREARMS INDUSTRY ROLLING OUT A BRAND-NEW CALIBER--RIFLES, CARTRIDGES, AND ALL--when they can't manage to produce PRIMERS, CARTRIDGE CASES, AND COMPONENT BULLETS IN SIGNIFICANT NUMBERS FOR EXISTING CALIBERS!

This is galling as &^*#$ to me. Just keeping it real, sports fans.

They only need to produce enough to keep buyers in the market begging like slavering dogs. If they produce so little as to make reloading impossible, the market will wither and perhaps die off when us geezers finally run out. If they over produce, and our sense of urgency declines as it did in 2019, rebates were offered to induce sales. It is a conundrum for them and for us. As a coincidence, I just got off the phone with my mentee and he has been home with the flu. In an effort to fight boredom he started to inventory his reloading stash, having just moved into and remodeled his first home. He was giddy to tell me he found 10K in primers. At least he listened a little bit back when times were fat.

Back to the BambiHammer. I don't need one, I don't want one, but I like the idea, considering the odd ball regulatory environment foisted upon hunters by bureaucrats. The guys searching for 200 gr. round nose .358" Core-Lokts should have some hope. My biggest problem is trying to decide which of my many options to take out to shoot one measly deer a year. I need to cull some of those options also.

All that said, wouldn't a Ruger #1 or a Uberti Hi-Wall in .360 BH go well on a deer stand. The Henry SS may be a suitable stand in.

cartridge built within a specific set of parameters. My suspicions is that this is a new case with 30/30 case head dimensions so only thing changing is barrel/chamber. Henry can do that easily. Until chamber dwgs come out and ammo is available to disassemble, using 30/30 cases is an experiment as CW found! Guess SAAMI doesn't have reg. data yet.

Not to argue, but to make another point:
The 357 Max pressure is 40kcup, according to one of my Speer manuals
The 350L pressure is 55kpsi, according to what I just saw on the SAAMI site.

I don't know how the two (cup v. psi) compare, but I'd still bet that they "cheated" with the 350L and jacked the pressure to sell it more. I seriously doubt we couldn't do the same with the 'Max at the same pressures.

It DOES make a difference which gun one is shooting what in too though.

I did search for SAMMI drawings. But they must be guarded. :headbang:

No arguing here Jeff. Id like to know everyones thoughts. I am replying/offering comments to some opinions, based on what I know understand and have read.

Not sure your meaning, but I agree with what you said. Its what I know to be true. The pressure of the 30-30 is also in the 40k range. (Cup is older and psi is current they do not jive 100% but as I understand, are close. What the 360 will be is anyones guess but Id bet its more then the 30/30! Probably up 50k range.

I own, shoot, have hunted and killed multiple times on deer and pigs with both calibers.

The primer situation is a false flag op if you ask me. It started as a shortage but now it is pure price gouging. They are holding them back to create a shortage now. I see no shortage anywhere on ammo around here. EVERY shop is stacked with ammo and some is on sale.

PSA and several others had 1000K round cases on sale that were cheaper than we could load. And that was with us having to not buy cases to load. Some of the pistol prices were lower than pre bat flu.

Now back to the post.

I will not be getting one of these. But I am happy they are going to offer it. Some are against it but they probably are against apple pie too. So just let the guys be happy that they want this.

I know it is winter and people want to be out shooting but let CW and others be happy about this. I have been known to be rude and condescending and need to be reminded of it every now and then. But it seems like more people are doing it more often now. its the winter blues!

My "meaning" is just another thought regarding what we don't know yet - pointing out one of the elusive tricks the industry has played fro many years. Not an accusation, but something to look for and consider.

There is much to learn yet, but I certainly appreciate this thread and your efforts in collecting intel on this thing. I also appreciate the great input from everyone else. Sure, we could wait and see, but I'm interested, it's a neat idea, I applaud the recognition of lever-guns and of rules esoteric to geographic/demographic points.

On the other hand, I appreciate and probably strongly agree with @Tomme boy 's points in his last post too. I neither need nor want a new gun. I think I'm officially an "old guy" now, because, for example; I've not done all I want to do with the 357 Max yet! I'm not bored with it and it certainly doesn't leave me short or disappoint in any way.

Some think that a guy who desires to own and drive a car from his own era is "living in the past," "can't accept change," or is too old and tired to "keep up," but in reality, we're just not being flighty and fickle. We've found things we like and wish to do more with it, maybe even eventually become bored with it, but I'm a long way from that. Stop shoving "newer/better" in front of my face while abandoning the last "newer/better" you sold me, when I haven't gotten out of what I HAVE all that I want to get out of it.

I HATE my "smart phone" and hear a lot of crap about me "not understanding the technology." I do not hesitate to remind the twits who think they "understand technology," that because of old people like ME, who had to truly understand and WORK for what they got out of a machine, it now such that any idiot could exploit/benefit from that technology. Phones may well be faster and have more storage than old computers ever did, but they use that speed and storage to make up fro a severe lack of real understanding, or the motivation to achieve any level of understanding.

So, yeah, I view anything new with a very skeptical eye, but skepticism isn't rejection.

SHOW ME. I'll look, I'll listen, but I want meaningful information, not hype.

THAT is sort of a rhetorical challenge, not directed at anyone in this discussion, but to the marketing folks.
