Not a Ruger but I've had no problems with the Leopold base & rings and the Burris 3x12 on several FA revolvers.

Nice cannon, Ben.

+1000!!! Love the matte blue finish and how those HPs look nested in the cylinder. And the one-hole group at 25 yards is pretty freaking awesome, too. Brad's right though, stretch it out to at least 100 yards and see how things REALLY do. I'll bet you can embarrass a few rifle shooters at a public range.

Ben,
You mentioned possibly scoping it. What kind of scope & mount?

Reason I ask is mine ate the weigand(sp?) mount in 6 full power loads. They refunded me & said the 3-12 Burris with 3 rings was possibly to much weight for it. Been considering the same mount with a smaller lighter optic.

The Super Red comes with Stainless Steel Ruger Scope rings that fit into cuts made in the top stap of the revolver ( see photo below ). Pretty unlikely you could tear the scope rings off. Might shake a scope apart, but the rings will be there, they won't be going anywhere !

I have a couple of Burris scopes. A 2x and a 4X.

My 44 mag wears a Weaver 2.5-8X. It has lasted over 1K rounds with no trouble. It previously was on my 309 JDJ Contender barrel and did well there.

I have about 1/2 dozen pistol scopes.
I need to go through them and decide
what I want to try on the " Big Casull ".

Definitely go with crosshairs for target work. I put an Ultradot on my Model 29 with the intention of learning how to hunt with a revolver and it ended up being just a range toy needing a more precise optic. Tough to shoot a 2" group at 100 with a 4 MOA dot! Doable with a 6" circle template and wide-mouth Sharpie, but a pain.

The higher the power the more you notice wobble. Higher power also requires better alignment between scope and the eye.

And yes Rick, I wobble even on a rest. At 8X I can see the crosshairs move around the black.

That I have worked on. Just holding the grip to hang on, not squeezing it to death.

I just cast some of the Lee 434640s from the mould I got from Glen. Want to see how they do in the revolver. Will start with 100 new cases too. The old ones can be relegated to plinking use in the rifle.

How many times have I told you that revolver ain't no chicken and you cannot choke it to death? The tighter you squeeze anything the more your hand will shake. Also just because you can see that wobble with a higher power scope does not mean the wobble isn't there with a low power scope. The wobble is still there, just can't see it well with low magnification. Work on the grip for long range revolver accuracy until the wobble is gone, no more grip than enough to keep it from slipping in your hand. Any tighter is too tight. Relax your hand, arm, shoulder. Then of course there is the tighter you grip it THE MORE of the recoil you will feel. The lighter the grip the less felt recoil.

My SRH in 44 mag, 7.5 inch barrel, is amazingly accurate too. Rick coached me enough on handgun shooting and loading to get me an honest 1.5 inch 5 shot group at 100 off the bench.

My 7.5" SRH in 44 Magnum has a 4X Leupold. With some Randy Garrett loads, I was able to put 5 shots into 1.75" at 100 yards, but that's been a long time ago. Per a post above, I practiced quite a bit to get a consistent grip and trigger release before I shot this group.

To get the 4X scope to "light up" alignment has to be just right.

I haven't hunted in a few years, but the last deer I killed was with the SRH at 105 yards with a 320gr SSK from Penn Bullets powered by Win 296.

My SRH is an outstanding revolver and built like a brick out house.

And more important is to do it the same every time. Failure shows up on target very quickly. Been there, done that. Grip is my downfall.

I suppose another thousand rounds next year will help reinforce a few things.

Creating good ammo is easy, getting the most from it is the hard part.

That IS a beautiful machine, but 454 Casull is a bit more beast than I care to herd. My S&W Mtn Gun (4" 44 Mag) or the BisHawk 45 Colt are as much sidearm as I like, and both of those get a lot more moderated loadings than they get full-value ammo. Lyman #429421 at 900 FPS or 1075-1100 FPS and Lyman #454424 at 1000 FPS get shot much of the time. At some point, it's best to holster up and unsling the rifle. JMHO, those who enjoy getting hammered by recoil are more than welcome to my share of that experience.

One advantage of hand cannon is that they allow a person to still indulge in masochism after age or disease has made such activities with shoulder-mounted cannon unwise for retinal health.

Hadn't thought about it like that before. I'll pass that on to my brother ,as he just had to go through a re-attachment surgery on his shooting eye due to torn retina.

It'll be a few more weeks before he knows how it'll all turn out, but looks good so far. He was thinking of downloading his whelen, but this may be a better idea for him.

The "doc" has never said it was due to heavy recoil(my brother is 73), but it's a torn retina all the same, no matter the reason.

Thought i had decided my next handgun would be a .45 Blackhawk, but this has me re-thinking things lol.
The Redhawk "should" have a faster locktime being double action, plus the advantage of firing double action if needed....HHHMMMMM.

Wish i'd bought one of each back when they were a lot cheaper lol, but i was into Smith 29's back then. No regrets with that one though, except the last one i had was stolen. Lol they didn't know it had a broken hammer pin after an action job and about 30,000 light to midrange loads through it with cast and a lot of magnum loads to boot on top of that.

Dang...i'm never gonna get that Henry lever gun at this rate!

I shoot mostly 45 Colt in this one.
I have 100 ea., 454 Casull cases, but seem to enjoy shooting the 45 Colt .

I really enjoy shooting my IDEAL 454424 HP that Erik HP'd for me.
The mould cast large at .456"
Ther 454424 HP loaded into 45 Colt brass at about 900 - 950 fps is very enjoyable to shoot. This load is VERY UNLIKELY to shake this Super Red loose in the next 500 years.

Erik amazes me. I have a 2C Lee TL452-230-TC NIB that needs to go to him for his Lee HP conversion.
