Had a real nice trip about 80 miles south to pick up a pool for SWMBO. Saw some areas we'd never been in before, gorgeous country in Lewis Co NY. Also found out I have a couple of new projects for her I wasn't aware of. Seems I'm building her a duck pond where our always wet dog kennel sits now. It's not a bad spot at all for a small pond, lousy spot for a kennel though! That means I have to get those crawler tracks, which means another trip to Vermont- using a paper road map this time!!! Also committed to buying a 5 foot 3pt rototiller from a friend locally. He and his Mrs are wonderful folks that market garden and make maple syrup. He had to make the decision on what to sell to be able to swing the new side by side he's getting. So the 4wd ATV is going as is the Ford 5000 tractor loader (which I would have bought instead of the exact twin I already bought, and his doesn't need the rebuild!) and the tiller. We cut a deal and he said he'd have to get his old Troybilt Horse going again to do the gardens. "No George, you just call me and I'll till them!" Sometimes he forgets Marines like he and I stick together! Anyway, the side by side is so he can get around sugaring, gardening, getting firewood, trapping and hunting easier. He's in his mid 70's and while he's in good shape an very active, an ATV is a bear on the shoulders if you use it a lot. He went through some siattica (sp?) issues last fall and couldn't do much. Drove him nuts. Anyhoo, I think he'll be happy with the SXS, especially at sugaring time. They have a lovely sugarhouse, all new construction, just a gorgeous set up. You don't really make money at sugaring, but it helps pay the taxes and gets you out of the house after 4+ months of winter. So the tiller will come here so I can stop trying to make my old Simplicity riders tiller work "one last time". The poor old thing was probably fine for lighter soils but trying to chop up clay is way too much for it. This newer rig will do the pressing need of restoring the old pool pad, plus tilling up areas rutted with tire tracks in the fields. Nothing jars your teeth more than hitting tire ruts while concentrating on mowing hay!

Got most of the lawn mowed again, had a set of lambs last night sometime but the ewe only got one up. The other looked like it was a breech and didn't make it. Not doing real good in the lambing/kidding line so far this year.

GPS units are much the same. A week ago when going to pick up the puppy I used the GPS to find the kennel, added at least 45 minutes to the drive not to mention driving in circles down gravel roads that couldn't really be called roads. Was heading west on state route 202 and the GPS tried to tell me the place was on both sides of the highway. It said turn right (north) but that gravel road turned into a dead end cow path. Back on the 202 heading west again and the GPS says turn left (south) down another gravel road. Finally found a lady on a lawn mower & asked her, she said she volunteers at the kennel, she got in her car and I followed her down three more gravel roads. Damned GPS didn't have a clue, I would still be driving in circles down cow paths.
Yeah, the lady I got the harness from warned us not to take "Old Stagecoach Rd" if the GPS said to use it. Seems it's common for people to get sent up this "road" which was abandoned 150 years back! It's been a cow path going back 6 generations in her family, but the town won't take it off the list of roads for some weird reason. People!, never underestimate their ability to do something goofy for no apparent reason!

Well this weekend spells the end of a dream of one of my building projects anyway. About 20 years ago I bought some Doug Fir Timbers from when the Coal Bunkers was torn down. These were build up Timbers 21 foot pieces bolted together with a one by spacer in between. Now these Timbers are 8”x22” each, staggered together to make a continuous ramp that rail cars full of coal were pushed up were they could open the bottom chutes to dump into the auger to fill the bunkers. Been buying coal from the bunkers since I got to Alaska in 74. Family owned business.. pull your truck up under the bunkers, pull the cord fill the bed of your pickup with lump coal. Good heat.
Well I was going to separate the Timbers and clean them up by pressure washing the old grime and coal dust out then grind the surfaces. Old growth Doug Fir cleaned up and with the proper oil finish would look gorgeous. Planned on building a cabin up in the woods behind the cemetery, could make a 20 x30 cabin. Would be beautiful. But not enough time and the personal energy supply is dwindling. Lot of very heavy work. Still have a ton of projects that need to be completed, like the cabin 100 yards down our driveway. So these are up for sale.

Took the kid on a 200 mile round trip today. Went to see my uncle in the nursing home. It gave the boy a chance to drive on all types of roads. My nerves are shot. Its not that he is that bad a driver it's just that he does not coast easy into things like I do, and I am used to being the one controlling the car.
Just got home.

I've tried teaching several different women that unless you're going up a hill in San Francisco, you don't have to keep the accelerator depressed right up to within 20 feet of the stop sign. They don't seem to grasp that, "an object in motion tends to stay in motion".
With today's fuel prices, each time you take your foot off the accelerator a little earlier, you save 10 cents.

Yep. I payed Four bucks + a gallon the other day, it is now the old double nickle or slower for me and am shifting up quicker than I used to. Watching that TACH like a hawk and keeping her under 2K if at all possible. I know I am ticking people off and that's fine, they can go around.

Out on my Sunday morning retirement part-time job, I was pushing a heavily ladened 96-gallon garbage can up a steeply inclined concrete driveway when my left shoe lost traction and I went down on the left knee. Decided to wait till I got home to have Nurse inspect the damage, but did notice that there were two good sized tears/rips/holes in the pants knee, so I must've slid backward after I hit though I don't remember doing so. Nurse inspected, cleaned and bandaged the damage -- one larger than a silver dollar size abrasion and another three times its size.

That put the kibosh on the rest of the day, including a nice sunny Sunday walk with Nurse and Duke. :(

Tomorrow morning will determine if I do Monday's work Monday or put it off till Tuesday, but putting if off screws up the rest of the week's work schedule.

Jim, usually (!!!) you can take the tire and slip the inner side over the rim if you lube up the bead area and rim pretty good. Because it's not on the rim you can tilt it at angles you couldn't otherwise. Have you tried something like that?

As far as the wheel being stuck to the shaft, I'm not sure if that model uses a key way, but it's likely. If it's rusted, or galled, on, then a puller is probably going to be required. That may entail drilling a couple or 3 holes in a solid, (no air there) part of the wheel. Wish I was closer and I could help ya out.

Memorial Day service today. Yard work after that I imagine. Kids coming over for a barbeque later. Maybe they'll bring the puppies!

Local farm lost a barn to fire yesterday. Nice people, terrible thing to happen.

Smoked a couple of slabs ribs, yesterday and had Rick and Cutie over. Both puppies were exhausted, after that. Even the almost ten year old one.

Yep, baby Cutie had much fun. She even got to show off her talent as a plate licker, even thought the potato salad was fine eatin. Hhmmm . . . So did I. :)
