I was going to write something something semi-intelligent about making .45 Colt cases out of 7.62x54R with a drill, tubing cutter, and a file to fit an oversized chamber, but now I have this image of...never mind.

These two guys started in the early 1970’s. They had to keep updating from points to computers. SAE to metric sizes. They quit wrenching and spent the last working years doing smug tests for the state.

If our mechanics did smug tests in our State they would get to be wealthy in Madison.

For over 25 years, if you lived in one of the urban areas, you had to have your car tested for pollution at a state facility before you could get a new annual license. In 1996 I bought a new F-150 and had to have it tested ($35) before I could by license plates ($550) the first time even though I lived in a rural area.

Yep same in CA except your plates are only about 1/3 what they cost in CA. Here there is no smog test and my plates are $23 a year.

Michigan tried a smog testing, years ago. Didn't last long. Too may ways for the hoopties to get around it. IE, if the cost of the repair more than the hooptie was worth. Other Eastern states had stricter laws. Couldn't license a hooptie..............that had fenders held on with baling wire.

Ohio it depends on the county you live in. I am lucky to live in a rual area, so no smog test.
My plates are about 50 bucks per vehicle every birthday. Fee rate also depends on county road taxes, so plate prices differ per county.
It is also pro rated for new plates on a new vehicle
Transfer fee to another vehicle after you sell the plated one, is around 10 bucks.
We can get 30 60 or90 day tags if we buy a vehicle we are not knowing we will keep, or paper work- title is held up for some reason, but those must be got before you title it.

No the plates were $550 each year. In 1998 the voters pasted a $30 a year tab. However the state Supreme Court threw it out. But it got over 75% yes votes and the legislature reduced it in 1999. However, they let cities and counties added surcharges for car tabs. Mine are about $90 a year for ferry's, buses and light rail even though they are not available to me.
