Looking for steel/waterfowl shot for SIL.
Fiver, what is a decent brand for waterfowl? Probably wood/teal or goose?
With apologies to fiver for butting in, but, for Teal, Wood Ducks and other puddles ducks using factory ammo we like FASTSTEEL by Kent. 2 3/4" with 1 1/16 oz. of #4 steel. The only thing I like better is my hand loads. I load 15/16ths. oz. of steel #3 shot with 37 grains of Alliant Steel going almost 1,700 fps fired through a Modified screw in Rem Choke. I use disposable Estate brand hulls I get free at trap ranges. I no longer miss 1 3/8 oz. of lead over a bunch of Alcan AL-7 and that's asying something.

Geese are a whole 'nuther kettle of feathers. Giant Canadas take lots of killin' with their heavier frame, white geese and lessers are easier. The big boys and girls need 3" loads of BB's the smaller geese fold nicely with high speed loads of 1's.

Find exact loading from Precision Reloading with their "Lighning Steel Manual and you can get components there also.

My guys that shoot factory though use Kent.

Roger's Sporting Goods is showing steel shot in case lots in stock.
I didn't go to check out to see if they notified you then that they didn't have any. They have been sending me adds weekly.

Wow that isn't case lots, it is per box at case lot prices.
I thought this might be the easiest was to get Rick H's attention and also let the rest of the readers know about Rick's good advice.

Back when we were talking about Chiggers, Rick mentioned treating clothes with Permethrin. Well I did mine special poison work clothes and a set for Sue. Wearing our treated clothes out in the prairie while killin' thistles in the head high grasses, we have had no new chigger bites. That is at least a two hour exposure repeated twice, no bites.

However, while mowing the perimeter trail of the prairie, one inevitably has to get off the mower to move branches etc. Not wearing the treated clothing while mowing results in getting a chigger bite or two in just those brief moments off the machine.

Life experience on steel shot .
Kent Fasteel is about the best .
Cheaper brands , PMC , Blue Steel , Estate etc , are great down to about 32°F . It's the powder selection and it ain't Blue Dot , maybe Steel .
Select loads rated over 1450 fps MV and one size over what you would use in lead .
1-1/16 oz of steel has the same pellet count as 1-3/8 oz of lead , steel holds way to tighter groups .

I used to shoot 1-1/16 oz of 1 or B 1470 fps advertised . It's hard on even late season mallards and mid season honkers to 45 yd . My Dad or BPS steel special threw about an inch a yard patterns with 1-1/8 oz #6-8 lead and 95% inside 27" at 40 yd with B steel .

I was out of work a few days when I hit a deer with the cruise in the Troop car set at an honest 55mph. The airbag took my left arm, which had been dislocated during a boxing match (another fun story) and whipped it out the window at about 150mph! Those things are dangerous.
The airbags are powered by sodium azide (solid rocket fuel). The bag material will leave a terrific burn on your face. We keep enough Water-Jel to treat several burns in each of the vehicle first aid kits.

Kent is good.
so is Fiocchi, I shot a lot of Fiocchi [both 2-3/4 and 3" back when it was the same price as reloading it,
and got the Kent stuff in 3-1/2 with the big pellets [BB or Larger] for Geese.

as long as you have 1400-1450 fps, and enough pellet size to carry the mass to the birds, 45 yds. is easily doable.
I like number 1 and number-2 for Ducks because I never knew if I was gonna be shooting Teal, gadwall, widgeon, red heads, bufflehead, Pin tails, spoon bills, or Mallards.

when it was ruddy ducks, or Scaup at 20' I switched to 3's and sometimes [rarely] 4's.
I always shot an improved cylinder choke and just changed shot size to match what I was doing that day.

between my reloads and the factory stuff I kinda settled down on loading the gun with Fiocchi 3" NO-1's for about 80% of my shooting, or those same hulls loaded to the same speed and shot amount using Steel powder.
in their 2-3/4" hulls I used number-2's and reloaded them with 800-X.

Need a new push mower. Mine is 6 years old and started loosing power, using a lot of oil. I tore it down, it needs a rebuild. Problem deck is in need of repair too. Plus all the parts I need to do it right, a new one of the same brand is 20 bucks cheaper then rebuilding it.
Guess it is time to swipe the Home Depot card.

Fiocchi "Golden Pheasant" 5's were great out of a 16 ga Ithaca on anything I ever tried them on. Not steel, I know, but I like Fiocchi anyway. Not sure I can still get them.

Supposed to be over 90 with very high humidity today, so I guess I'll be outside working in it! Sub-zero weather is just around the corner...

Alaska Land of the Midnight Sun
Well what Karyn and I did starting Saturday was book -plan a winter - springtime of snowbirding. Had help from friend Dave on Saturday. We had been doing research on Arizona and some Sourthern California RV camping and decided to get together Saturday to make a loose itinerary and reservations.

So for Karyn and I we will leave Alaska about mid December grab our motorhome which is in Black Diamond Washington and park in or sons driveway about 30 minutes away until right after Christmas. Talon, Jamie and the littles will come up from Ashland Oregon for Christmas and after we will travel together to Ashland were Karyn and I will camp in their back yard for a couple of weeks. The first week in January we will head across on 140 to hit 395 and head south.. If weather is bad we will head to Crescent City and take highway 1 and 101 south. If the weather is really bad we will do interstate 5. 5's a last resort, I hate 5. We have a few days flexibility on leave time. Plan on taking time down 395 mainly on the section south of Reno. We are going to stay in Yucaipa at the County camp grounds while visiting my two brothers for a couple of days. We will be towing our little Toyota car so we will have our own independence.

Next we start out with Joshua Tree N.P. In Southern California. Then Arizona. We have booked 7 or 8 State Parks from 2 days to a week in two parks. They are booked in a fashion so the next park is as little as 20 miles and the biggest drive to the next is about 100 miles. In between the State campgrounds are plans to hit BLM lands until the next campground stay. At 7 to 8 miles to a gallon this will help a lot. Most of the places we are staying don't have power but we have solar and a good battery bank of 6 volt batteries, 70 gallons of water, and 24 gallons of propane. We can stay out 5 days if we shower twice each and longer if we are more conservative.

By the third week in February we will be headed up towards Page Arizona and Sourthern Utah. Lots to see and do there. The weather will be a little crispy at night but are old motorhome is set up for it.

Dave will be along with his RV for the Arizona and Utah parts and my brother Joe will be joining us at a couple of camps in Arizona.

After goofing around in Utah till mid March we plan to head back north on highway 50 into Nevada and Winnemucca catching US 95 north to State Route 140 again to head back to southern Oregon.

All is subject to change on a whim. Going to be fairly flexible, some stuff is locked in because of relatives and friends. Plans are for some light hiking, a little shooting on BLM land, reading, playing cards with Dave, napping in the sun, using the BBQ and dreaming about the snow and cold we will be missing. Maybe a little golf, I forgot we have clubs along.

Well, I've lost my farm help. Gordy just landed a job with a local welding outfit!!! Went in, talked with the foreman, did some test welding and shazam! Starts 8AM tomorrow morning! Got to say I'm very proud of him. He's excited because they do all sorts of shop and on the road work, have enormous equipment, excavators, crawlers, etc, plus they are a Kioti/McHale dealer which means he'll get to play with big boy farm toys! I'm very happy for him!

Outstanding Bret, in addition to being very proud of Gordy, take some time to feel a whole bunch of pride in yourself. While Gordy had it in him all along, you're the one who nurtured it, brought it out and made sure he didn't lose his way.

Kind of you SW. Gord has a natural mechanical talent. And he's incredibly good natured and kind as well as being a very hard and conscientious worker. I'm hoping this works out for him.

As long as I'm doing the parent stuff, my 18 yoa daughter has returned home after discovering that living with the biological family wasn't the utopia she thought it would be. My wife is handling that hot mess, but I still pray for the best outcome. We started off with 4 foster kids, had to cut ties to one fairly soon, lost one the day he turned 18 and left only to wind up in prison a few months later. We are of the belief that there is a plan to all this, but it's kinda tough to figure just what it is sometimes.
